So all Maran chicks have white/pink feet? I have been looking at pictures all over the internet and see many with yellowish feet. I dont think they have feathers on their legs... I will look at the leg color and look for leg feathers when I get home. The lady I bought them from said they were pure bred. Shes seemed to really know what she was talking about. But.....Who knows... Any guess on sex?

Top left pullet, top right maybe pullet...
Bottom is most definitely a roo.
Anyone second that? I'm still mastering my "chick sexing" skills.

All Marans should have pink/white soles on their feet, yes, but only such varieties like Wheatens should have solid pink/white legs and feet. Yellow means they're Barred Rocks, and either the "breeder" does not know or is ripping people off. . . Some people even cross BRs with Cuckoo Marans.

Looks like a hen and a roo from the feathers. Legs need to be whitish in color. Chicks sometimes start out yellowish and turn out white as they mature. Colors are so hard to tell in pictures. Standards call for feathered feet.

Thanks for the info. I emailed the lady I bought the chicks from. This is what her add said I was buying.

"Rare and Heritage pure breed chicks. Most in this lot will be marans.
There are purebred wheaten, black copper, cuckoo and golden cuckoo marans. Also a few brown eggers and olive eggers.
2-3 weeks old. They got mixed up when they were hatching.
As much as I can I will include at least 6 -8 marans of various colors in each of the 2 lots. Straight run and no choosing. They have cost me more than that for the eggs"

Me too...

Whooo hooo on the possibility though...for the past 5 weeks I've been telling myself my luck just cant be THAT bad to have 10 roos out of 11 chicks.

I have a few chicks like the one in the bottom picture that are just HUGE--more like GYNORMOUS! I coulnt catch the little suckers to take a picture for size comparison but one, at just under 6 weeks, is as tall as my 4# 8mo EE girl. That is going to be a lot of Marans when he grows up!

It does look like you have a couple of girls there. Good Luck with it...

Bravo... first two DO have girly faces!!!! I am calling them pullets and the feet color too... Although It could be true that the second pic is a hen... I will call it a roo. I hope this is the case as when you go to breed you will know what the stock looks like and get a feel earlier on so you may cull easier and faster...

I think the girl is inthe picture with 2, she would be on the left. The others have more comb development than her and I'm sure they are roos. I have 4 months old pullets that still have pale combs and hardly any development yet. Also, the ones with the white spots on the breast must be cuckoos. Black coppers won't have white spots on juvenile feathers. They might have a white feather that is all white, but not spotty.

Wheatens are the only Marans that are born with yellow feet/legs. All other colors should have pinky/whitish soles, & dark tops of toes. Also, their beaks aren't that yellow.
The Wheatens look ok, probably blue wheatens, the others I'm questioning that they are the mixed ones.
