Bravo... also California breeder stock.... go to page 636 and look at post by shmooborp 6360 and you will see the famous comb from a breeder in Cali.

Here is a pic of mine from Cali.... every hen I have from this breeder has a large comb... It is hecka hard to tell em apart. I am posting this for everyone's benefit.

I hope I am not being too redundant... I know some of you have heard me post this before. I would just hate to have someone cull their females by accident like I did once.

Okay, so, here's an interesting challenge for me. This might or might not be full of talk and photos, but. .

I have a cockerel I hatched from Cree Farms, he's a very nice Black Copper of Bev Davis lines. I have no clue which egg he hatched from because I'm still stuck on how to keep track of black chicks in the incubator. . . However, there was only one egg I had that was so glossy it seemed super coated with polish. It had a pretty hard hatch, and I had to help it out due to it being crammed between the hygrometer, the incubator wall, and two other eggs - It was the last one, and the chick was weak all night long. Later on, I realized one of my only two cockerels of the hatch had an eye problem, so I posted with worry about it with these photos:

Now, as time passes, I'm coming to a decision that I like this guy more than my other cockerel that hatched in the same batch. His comb is better in my opinion, he's got a very calm, laid back temperament, and he's growing a better body than the other one. Of course, only more time will tell, but what do you guys think? Also his comb is starting to lean to the side a little - Should I worry of it flopping? Because I really don't want a floppy combed cockerel.

Anyway, now that I think of it - Could he have an eye problem because he was the one who hatched from the glossy egg?

My main concern is of him being from that glossy egg - I'd love to have more super glossy eggs. The next concern is of his eye problem being genetic vs not genetic, and his overall conformation being near perfection.

Here's the egg I'm talking about . . .

I'll continue to post pics and personal debates on him versus my other cockerel though. . . He's only almost 6 weeks old now, so he's got LOTS of maturing to do, and so does the other one. . . I'll show the other one later on for comparison.

Really, this is one of those many fun things about Marans. . . Choosing out the who's and why's. I'll likely keep both, as I want a lot of roosters to sample who's the best and go from there, but I want my choices to be good.

I just didn't want to say that. I feel the same.

geebs .... You lucky girl! Beautiful jewels you got there today!

LOL I know, I'm not holding my breath. I'm not in a hurry to get rid of them so worst case scenario I'll just have a lot of roos to choose from

Isn't the roo one of the most integral parts of a breeding program?! I'll just keep telling myself that to make me feel better

Okay, I am puzzled and need to pick the brains of those of you with Marans experience.

I am new to the breed and just hatched a few batches of eggs.
I hatched some blue coppers two weeks ago..the first two chicks were what I expected, a blue, and a splash.
The next two have me scratching my head...

First 2 chickies

Are these two normal for blue coppers? I don't want to look foolish, but being new to the breed, I can't learn without asking

Thanks all!

Do know that the last chick is a girl but have no clue what color....I have never seen that before but I only work with black, blue and splash.
