I have hatched several cuckoo marans. The girls are always darker black than the boys. The dot on their head .... the girls more precise and circular; the boys more splashed out and larger (like into the neck).

Thanks Kathy, so does it look like I've got 2 boys? These are the only 2 I have so its hard for comparison.

found a lady not five miles from home, on backroads no less, selling wade jeanne line babes for $5 each. she had about a hundred from 1-4 weeks old! she traveled a state away to get hers last year, and these are the babies of them. after all this time wanting fbcms, and then i see a note on my tiny local feed store, with pics of the eggs--unbelievably dark. i called and went over, bought 5, and i think i'm going back for some a little older as soon as i sell some javas so i have more room in the brooder! she is selling GORGEOUS DARK eggs--i'd say at least 5s on the color scale for sure, for every single one in her incubator that i saw--for $20/ dozen!

i know it's early...but i'm still curious. i'll update this thread once i know for sure. maybe it will help someone else later. smile

this is the parent flock...comments are welcome. i know they came from good genetics...the lady was about 75 years old and ferreted around in her pocketbook for a wrinkled piece of paper with "wade jeanne line" and the number and directions to where she got her birds originally. i hope they have retained jeanne characteristics though! strengths or weaknesses noted in the flock would be appreciated, as i plan to go from here and do the best i can to improve, but i don't want to do anything that will jeopardize the EXCELLENT egg color i saw...particularly as ALL the eggs were quite dark, and we are not at the beginning of the laying season either (here in the south anyway!)

I don't know that much but I wish I could find something this this in my backyard...it looks like that little ole lady knows how to take care of her birds and they are beautiful congrats on the find

Congrats on the very cute fluffy chickie chicks! Nice looking parent stock too!

#2 looks like it has greenish colored feet or is it just my monitor???

huh, had not noticed that...looks greenish on my monitor too. gonna go check!

ok, checked next to my EE babies, who are green on the feet. the FCBM has gray feet, and darker gray legs. definitely not green like on the screen (using flash at night with terrible backlighting) but it could conceivably be considered a slightly greenish gray. is this a problem? this is the one that has some copper coming out on the back too.
