Snowbird: I don't get your comment about the leg color? And the wheaton. I am not quite sure what you are saying in regard to the leg color. Lots of other color marans also carry the same color. It doesn't mean the bird carries a recessive gene for that. It speaks of the color balance that is part of the genetic makeup of the bird. It is actually prized by the French to have that color. I can see where one might get the idea though... The strong idicator is the hackle color...It gives clues to the wheaton gene.

I am trying to clarify....If I have misunderstood, please forgive mel. If I am correct in what I think you meant, I do hope you are not culling based on the leg color against the dark egg gene. It is said to be the strongest in birds with the red stripe as you called it....down the shank. Resolution has a post in this regard.

I believe the American group that is involved with setting the standard for the APA does't care what the French Think. But, they do have to submit the standard according to the APA guidelines and use the required language with an eye towards making the standard as close to the French as possible.

Interesting, the French keep changing their standard. Last year, they had the black copper male breast "all black". Now, it allows for some copper color in the breast. Why? Probably becaues they have the same problem as we have here, wheaten has been mixed into the black copper. Instead of correcting the birds, they changed the standard.

As far as naming breeders, Its been common knowledge that some of Jeanes birds throw wheaten. No new news there. There are also some dedicated breeders that are working on their lines and have remarkable birds from the Jeane line. One just has to make sure they know what they are doing & the background of the birds.

With all the talk about the bc throwing wheaten I was wondering what do people do with wheaten that hatch from bc .
Do u have any pictures of grown bc sports (wheaten) I would love to see some pictures
do u raise them to old age ?
do they breed true ?
how do they compare to the top breeder stock of (Davis /Presley) or “true” wheaten? I know the wheaten from Presley line came from a sport from kellerman line many generations ago ,and Davis line I have no idea where they came from but they seem to breed true as well.
I am always trying to learn but my gut tells me they would need a lot of work to be called wheaten and I sure hope that they don’t get mixed in with some of the true wheaten that is out there . if my wheaten start to throw black copper il give up lol … it would also be a miracle
anyway i wont be adding any unknown wheaten to my flock in order to keep as pure as i can ,,it looks like my egg color is improveing with the first generation of breeding daughters back to origonal roo with the birds im careing for ....and il post some pictures soon for anyone who cares and get the incubator up and running with the next generation
take care all ,,,,, i am just rambeling

I was wondering too whether or not they will breed true to the Wheaten color. I was hoping that I might hatch a Wheaten chick then be able to use her (her, wishful thinking I know!) for a Wheaten Olive Egger project... just a thought.

I have not hatched wheaten from blackcoppers so I have no personal experience with what they look like or what they throw.

I know that there are people who have started their Wheatens from those offspring. There was some discussion when these first started showing up about whether to breed them or not. of course, it was divided about it, some saying no, others saying why not.

I don't hear much either way now, and it seems that people are not talking about them anymore, except when someone gets one unexpectedly.

well wheaten i think is the most resessive of all so mommy bc and daddy bc in some small part carry the genetic trate Relating to the form of a gene that is not expressed as a trait in an individual unless two such genes are inherited, one from each parent. In an organism having two different genes for a trait, the recessive form is overpowered by its counterpart, or dominant, form located on the other of a pair of chromosomes so if i under stand this hole thing is that it is hard to breed out
so the birds will be badly mixed i think ..... i dont no 4 sure .im just learning what some of the words mean and ive only had marans a few years (close to 2 ) i no zero about bc and i put my energy into wheaten and being a daytime middle age carpenter lol lol

I want to join the Marans! I have 7 BC's in the bator! Hatch date is the 29th of this month! This is my second try for some of these beauties!!

I hope it's OK if I ask a question here.

Last month my friend and I were given about 2 dozen Black Copper Maran eggs in trade for some started chicks. We hatched 10 chicks from these eggs.

Some of the chicks hatched out solid black, while some others had a coppery red tint to their heads. The chicks are a little over a week old now, and their feathers on their wings are growing in showing some coppery red in their wings.

IS this normal for the Black Copper Marans line? Or have we been duped?

The eggs were definitely dark like a Marans eggs should be.

Thanks! I'll try to take some pics of the chicks if needed.
