I took a few bad pics of my blue and black copper from peachick. They are growing very nicely and are friendly. I am trading the three cockerals for Buff Orphington hens next week because I cannot keep a rooster. I am very happy with the lacing on the blue pullets feathers. I cannot see any coppering yet but their faces are feathering in nicely.

These are quickly becoming my favorites as they are very tame and friendly I regret having to give up the cockerals. Is it normal for them not to show their coppering at this stage of their development?

Thanks,
Henry

Mothergoose,
Great start on the eggs! They are adorable! And to get two in one day, in the cold! They deserve a little warm oatmeal!! What super layers!!
Your Mandarins are beautiful. We have talked about setting up a Mandarin yard - I almost got a pair last year - they had been pinioned, but my duck area is covered so it isnt necessary, I dont think...
You say Mandarins are difficult to hatch in an incubator, how do they compare to Call Duck eggs in the incubator??
If you ship ducklings, can they make it safely to California?

Welcome to the Marans thread, it's great to see you here, and your birds and eggs are lovely.....

hey mothergoose the wheaton and black copper marans are great winter layers. They seem to lay better in winter then any other time.my other chickens stop laying and marans start laying guess they like the cold;

My guess is, that if you can hatch those you can hatch Mandarins. I have hatched them, its not that its impossible--it is just hard. I havent ever shipped live birds--but I think I am going to have to start! I need to do some research on that. I think they would be fine overnighted to California. I am originally from San Diego--where are you from? I moved from California to Iowa when I graduated high school and went to college. I have been stranded here ever since!!

I read that the females copper shows up later--at about three months--I dont know if that is true or not. I had some hens that had no copper, too and I put them with an Ameraucana rooster to try to get olive eggers.

I am not sure what the norm is but all of my black copper marans had the copper color very early on.
Some had more than others but everyone still had some.
I have a pullet that is black with copper lacing around each feather on her back, the other pullets have the copper streaks down thier necks.
The roosters have always had alot of copper right off the bat.
Mine are 12 weeks old now and they just keep getting darker and more colorful.
