One more question, I don't know what breed this little one is. Looking at the pictures of your babies, it looks like she might be a Maran. What do you think?

It hasn't happened yet, but the way I am with animals, never say never!

I kiss my chickens all the time! I love the way they smell, like pine dust

I like the colors on your little one, but Im more inclined to think she is a mix or an EE, I have a couple very similar...I guess you wont know til an egg comes out of her?? Where did she come from??

Marans usually happen on purpose, with known moms and dads, so you can keep track of what their kids are gonna be like as best as you can in breeding programs...thats part of the reason why the current Marans fad is kind of messing with the Pure Marans Breeders right now...but there are still a lot of nice birds out there...Just need to know there's a huge difference between breeders birds and hatchery birds. You can still get really lucky and get a nice nice Cuckoo Marans from a hatchery sometimes though! We see them here!

I absolutely love your avatar, I've seen your dog and chicks in other posts, so CUTE!! It makes me smile every time I see it, I even made my DH take a peek! (I usually dont interupt his 4x4 stuff).....

Gotta go to a meeting, man work interferes with my internet time....

Hey, don't you have some Wheatens as well that will be ready to lay soon?? I thought you posted pics of some really pretty Wheatens that looked close to laying age a while back

They're five months old. No eggs yet. The suspense is killing me.

That's a Great Danish Slobberflap cockerel, which lays absolutely huge, very dark things. I'd be happy to mail you some.

I wouldn't want to clean up after him in a few months, and what a food bill. He is beautiful. I just love that wheaten roo too.

Just had my 1st tradigy (sp?) this evening
sad.png

I went out to give the chickens some left over lettuce and a few bad tomatos.
barnie.gif
I find a chicken stuck in between the 2 chainlink fence panels we had used as divider in the run. A big red blotch on both sides of her.
barnie.gif
I thought I was going to pull out a dead chicken.
hit.gif
And to my surprise and horror this Cuckoo Marans Pullet was still alive.
th.gif
She was pecked bloody and bald on her left side and on her right side was a 2 1/2 x 3 inch round hole about 1 to 2 inches deep.
sickbyc.gif
I could hear her suck air through what was left of her lung.

hit.gif
The poor thing she was so quite while I held her. Her comb was whitish pink very pale she was still dripping a bit of blood. Her plucked feathers were all over that fence area.
barnie.gif
It was horror-a-fying
barnie.gif

I called DH told him I had a badly wounded chicken and I needed help. He looked at her and checked to see if there was enough skin to try to sew her up with But we decided after all the blood she lost and as deep as it was with part of her lung missing. It was best to end it for her.
hit.gif
DH did it quickly with 1 blow. It was a very very sad thing. Then He went right to the run and removed the chain link panels. Saying that was 1 mistake we will Not make again.
I think she was the one brave little hen that would run out and dodge the older chickens and get on that fence and hop over to the other side and have that side all to herself. Poor little girl. Now I have 10 Marans pullets and 5 cockrells from my hatchery Cuckoo Marans.

Sorry I just had to vent and get that out. I hope I didn't disturb anyone with the Horrable details.

No, its okay, you need to talk, I hope you are alright. I am really sorry this happened. It sounds horrifying.

Your little girl sounded really special. You guys were really compassionate to end her suffering also. That is a sign you truly loved her.

You cant ever tell whats going to happen, I am finding that these chickens are WORSE than little kids, they get into the most unimaginaeable places and things! I almost lost my black copper rooster the other night, he was hanging by one leg, with a zip tie, on a cup hook! (Different post)
Take care of yourself, and solace in the rest of your flock...you are a good chicken mom, things happen....we cant predict everything....sometimes chickens make mistakes too...
