I'll be at the show too, I look forward to seeing some of the other Marans at the show! I cant wait to see your pullet in person! Is there going to be an egg show in Stockton? That would be so great!! I would love to get some new stock too, I dont imagine they sell those eggs though! I hadnt even thought of checking to see if anyone from the Marans clubs was bringing birds to sell to Stockton? They may have decent started birds for Breeding stock they could bring along?? What do you think, is it worth putting out there?? (Varieties besides Black Copper and Cuckoo) I have been so out of touch, and time is rushing by, I better get busy! Here I was thinking about getting a silkie at the show, and my PRIORITY is the Marans!

We'll be home tomorrow, I'll see how things went when I was gone, and we have more predator proofing and prevention we're doing (sound, lights, cameras, the works)

Drom, I love your birds! I hope they do well in the show, I look forward to seeing them if you show them at Stockton! See ya there!
Tina

Thanks Tina! You know, I am wondering if you have to show a trio. I know nothing about showing poultry really, so I went to the APA site as well as the club site that is hosting the Ventura and Stockton shows and I don't see anything on experimental breed divisions or non-rated divisions. But it sounds like dual purpose, standard breeds require a trio to register? I am assuming the Marans would fall under dual purpose, standard.
I'm going to have to do some research here-I'm not real clear on this yet.
It would be good for me if I could go to a couple little shows first .
Oh, well. Maybe I will post some questions at the Yahoo club forum.

No, you do NOT have to have a trio. I don't think there even WAS a blue wheaten cockerel or roo at yesterday's show. And there were two black copper roos, but I'm pretty sure there weren't six pullets or hens in that color.

Thanks! I sent an e-mail to the contact at the APA site to get more information on registration and divisions.

I've lurked the Marans Breeders of America site for almost a year now

I'm just a bit shy about posting, but I want to learn so bad! I see new people get on and jump right in asking the boldest (and sometimes ridiculous) questions or making outlandish requests of the more well known breeders (Hey Bev Davis - please send me a dozen eggs, oh, I need them this week?).....but we do need to get definite arrangements for the Marans portion of the Stockton show. I am only coming from Chico, about 3 hours away, but I CANT WAIT!!! This is one of the highlights of my year! I bring multiple carriers to pick up the birds I arrange to purchase, so I hope to purchase decent Marans breeding stock if the breeders are coming this way and I can afford it!! Like everyone else, I need to decide what specific colors I am going to continue to work with. I will keep my Cuckoos and Black Coppers, but I really love the Wheaten too! And I cant resist a Blue variety?? Oh, what to do... I am so glad you guys are here, and in this stage of showing/growing/breeding....you are wonderful!!

And Drom, I will be eagerly waiting to see your birds and your posts on the Yahoo forums also!!

Thanks,
Tina/tfpets

Just make sure you post on the right list. The one that is currently active with getting Marans into shows is here:

Thanks, I watch multiple sites, including the French Marans club, the yahoo groups, and several others, I "lurk" on the Marans Breeders of America site and the Marans Chicken Club - I understand theres some politico background, I try to stay out of it....I just want to love the breed/birds? I like seeing people from BYC on the other sites though, it feels more comfortable for some reason? Like having friends there?

Thanks for the tip.

I've missed a couple of days though, I know some are coming to Ventura, I wonder if anyones coming to Stockton...ahhh, we'll see. I wish I could have made Ventura, darn it.

I gotta go check my little peeping Araucanas now!!

Ok, sorry to hijack but I am very excited. I got my very first egg ever today. And, I am really surprised. It is my Ameraucana, Fiona, and I am just blown away by her little egg. She is just a hatchery bird I got at the feed store for 3 bucks. I think they got her from Belt Hatchery. Anyway, she laid a really pretty green egg. Ok, you're probably rolling your eyes right now, like big deal right? But I didn't expect them to have so much color. In fact I was assuming I would be disappointed actually.
I took about 10 pictures and I couldn't really get a picture that did it justice. It looks lighter in this pic than it is. It's super green.

Will they always stay this way? Or do they fade?

That is ONE BRIGHT EGG! You must be so proud!! Egg color does vary some, but not usually too drastically with my birds? And this is a BIG deal, your first egg! You could blow it out and keep it, its so precious! Not really enough to eat, but if you're in to that?

Beautiful egg! I was very excited when my new araucana hens gave me their first eggs, too -- I understand!

And yes, there's a lot of political baloney floating around on some of the sites. Don't believe everything you read. For instance, on one site people are spouting nonsense about Bev supposedly black-listing people if they dare to own birds from Ron Presley. Well, guess what?? I know of at least three people who are closely involved with the Marans Chicken Club showing effort, who own birds either directly from Ron or one generation removed from his birds -- including myself. And do ya see Bev suddenly deciding to blacklist us?? Nope, of course not. It's just silly. So take all that stuff with very large grains of salt!

You know, I'm glad you said that because I was wondering about that exact thing. (Not that it would stop me from showing if I really wanted to

)
But it had crossed my mind only because I've bred and shown other animals and I've seen that kind of thing a lot. Doesn't seem to matter what the species is.

And it can really spoil the joy and excitement people get out of showing and breeding the animals.
