I think maybe the best way to tell might be if there are cockerels in the group. Now, mine grew a little fast in the first 8 weeks and they come from a line that has more copper color than some, but all three of my cockerels had copper color developing by 3 weeks. But only one of my pullets did. The other two were all black. Later the two black pullets started to show just a bit of copper color on the back of the neck.

3 cockerels and 3 pullets-5 weeks

We are going to both get our first BC eggs around the same time- that will be fun

In my pic, yes its back there, the one in the middle with the most copper and the larger comb is the rooster. (not as obvious as Droms at that age

) The others have splashes of copper on them, but as teens with grown up feathers, that seems to have blended to all black, and they just have the copper collar feathers now.

Ok, thanks for the help. The ones tfpets posted look about like the ones in the pic the guy sent me, so maybe I'll gamble.

Yes we should!! When do you think they should start?? Then again, mine are big babies, and yours matured so much faster! My rooster is still a momma's boy, he likes me to pick him up and hand feed him treats even. I hope he'll get down to business! He's still got some growing up to do

It's funny you would say that about your cockerel because I was thinking the same thing today. My cockerels are such spoiled babies

Actually, your's look like they grew fast. They were big at 6 weeks. Are they pretty large birds now? Mine grew very fast in the first 8 weeks and then came to a screeching halt and leveled out. Maybe it was the chick starter.

Mine were born in July and Donna said they will probably lay in January

Did he tell you what line his birds come from? He should also be willing to show you the parents of these birds. Or if he got them from someone else, he should be willing to tell you who has the parents of these birds.

If he is not, well I wouldn't personally like that myself.

Oh wait-hey there now don't you already have the pretty russet BC eggs that you are hatching?

You're stocking up on BCs!
