Mine went through that growth spurt and stopped, then have been slowly growing since then. I was looking at them today and they seem to have gone through another stage of maturing and the rooster is starting to be more Roosterish, but is still a weenie. Not quite as dignified as yours, but he's getting there. They are not large birds at all, yet. I would put them at about 3/4 the size of my Salmon Favorelle, who was born last December...It's hard with so many stages of birds, plus bantam's here...to know what they're going to settle down and be. I have to be patient! I think I'll take my postal scale out tonight and weigh them! That ought to be fun!

Oh, I use a Coleman Cree LED 3 Watt Flashlight, It was $29 at Walmart, and worth every penny. If anyone considers it, make sure you get the one that takes the AAA batteries, not the wierd ones, they are really really pricey!!

For fear of seeming annoying, I am going to post the eggs I got from ebay. The ad said they weren't as dark as their Copper Black Marans. So I decided to try them for the heck of it. I figured I would get 4s, as that is the minimum an egg needs to be on the Marans scale to be considered a Marans.

Buyer beware, truly. I posted this on a bst thread, but for folks that don't read it there I wanted to put this out there.

The eggs on the right are my lovely uniform and dark redstar eggs. The two tiny ones on the top are from our tiny banty millie/OE cross. The eggs on the left are the Copper "Marans" I bought. Note how much lighter most of them are than my production red star lays. The two on top left were just a bit larger than my bantam eggs. I paid 38 bucks plus 13 shipping. The seller did a full refund when I requested it.

Here are the sweeties that laid my eggs.

I love to LOOK at eggs, I love to TOUCH eggs, and GATHER them, and PHOTOGRAPH them, but EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWW, I dont like to EAT them. I occasionally, and I mean occasionally, suffer through scrambled eggs, only with enough tobasco sauce to kill the taste!!

And about the Copper Marans - I'm a little suspicious that those are Marans at all, I think they are more like crossed out with Sex links.....those eggs are waaayyy too light. What lines were they from?? Amazing how we are living and learning, what a shame.

Annoying? Why would anyone think you're annoying. Now, raising chickens and hating the taste of eggs? That's annoying-AHAHAHAHHA

Wow, Tina's right. Those don't even look like bad Marans eggs. At least the person gave you your money back. Did this seller have a picture listed with the ad of very dark eggs, which would be deliberately deceptive, or is this person just really ignorant?

Yeah, I sure do miss being able to hang out and read the BYC forums. I started back to teaching at the end of Aug. and my mom found out she has breast cancer and that was the end of free time.

I don't know why they took so long to start laying but I'm so happy they did. I still haven't figured out if all of them are laying or just a couple. We get an egg a day so far. It's so much fun going out and finding them.

I hope to have more time again. It was so much fun reading through this thread and looking at everyone's pics. Boy, and I thought my eggs were dark. So many of you out there have great looking Marans eggs. Keep posting everyone!!!

Thanks Drom. Well, my son says that they taste better than any eggs he has ever eaten. I am a vegan and bought the chickens for their wonderful "manure" for my composters and for their companionship. I have to say though, they look very tempting and smell like heaven when they are cooking. I haven't eaten eggs for over three years. I use to love them.
Donna laid an egg today that was soooo.... dark. My son ate it and composted the shell before I got to take a picture. I really think it was at least a 6. Hopefully she'll lay another tomorrow so I can take a picture.

When are yours due to lay? Can't wait to see how dark they are. Donna really has a great line of BCMarans.

Maybe you can sneak a picture in for us before breakfast.

Mine should be due in January. I agree with you on Donna's birds. I love mine too.

The person is not ignorant. They are on the yahoo group breeders list. So you all can figure out this person. They sell many colors of Marans and claim good lines. They did not have a picture and said that these weren't as dark as their Copper Blacks, but they were working on improving color.

She shows the same picture of what look like #6 eggs for her Copper Blacks. I am sure that is not respresentative of what those eggs would look like if one ordered them either. This is a scam. She has made a fortune. What I wondered, which is why I ordered some, is how can a person sell that many eggs a week, and retain quality. Question answered......I don't know how someone can live with themselves making a livelihood cheating people. No reputable breeder would send out eggs like that.

I have read that Folks can breed out the color of a hen's eggs if they aren't careful. These could very well have started out as Marans but greed diluted them to this.....

Now back to the fact that Tina does not eat eggs.

That is so funny.

If Ninjapoodles stops by, you know how you always say your Marans are like jack rabbits and I keep saying mine are calm? Well my new babies (almost a month now) are insane. I think we share the same line.

I am relatively new to marans but I have been researching it alot and by the finding I really believe it is the rooster not the hen that determines how dark the eggs are. A breeder of marans told me you should use the rooster that is with the hen that lays the darkest eggs because the rooster carries the genes for dark eggs.
