My birds have the choice to go inside several wooden coop structures and chose not to, My other set ups are kennels/coops and not insulated. so I keep their chosen coops sides covered with tarps to keep the wind/rain off of them, deep straw inside, the roofs are peaked with conduit metal frames covered with tarps so water drains off. They are quite cozy, and snuggle together. Each coop has nest buckets, roosts, and I open it up each day to the Big Yard. I wouldnt use a heat lamp in one either, I would be worried about fire. I have had birds in my kennel coops, even when it snows outside sometimes, for 10 years. Havent lost a bird to the cold yet?

For your set up, I would just cover the sides with tarps or plastic to keep out the worst of the rain/snow/damp and call it good. It sounds like you have a very cozy set up!

Thanks Tina! Good to know. I won't worry now. I didn't realize you had snow where you are. You must be at a fairly high elevation. I am only at about 600 to 700 ft so snow is a rare occurrence here. I am at the base of the foothills. I will enclose the sides and bed it real deep with shavings.
They say happy chickens lay good eggs, so I definitely want to keep them happy

Drom, We only get snow every couple of years, we're at 1500 feet elevation, we are the foothills! I live on the Doe Mill Ridge above Chico, below Forest Ranch...We have our own climate here, its pretty awesome!
One year we got Hail that froze on the ground, 4 inches of it, on our road, which is the steepest paved road in Butte County...we had to chain up for weeks! But my birds were okay! They snuggle together at night, and I keep a close eye on them. Im not kidding, Id bring them in my house if I had to!
