Thanks so much.
I have wondered about some of these pics. Yes i believe that my husband wants to brred them, but first, have to get some. There is a local guy that my husband has talked to & he says his chickens are BC Marans, BUT, from what my husband has seen, they dont compare to the BC Marans that we have seen in some of these pics so thats why im on here. In hopes of getting honest, forthright people that KNOW thier chickens. We got some silkies given to us, & the 'chicken process' has litterally snowballed from there, & we would like a few BC Marans, as well as a few Buff Orpingtons.
Getting multiple reccomendations was great info.
I'm very happy with this site. This is what i was looking for.
Thanks so much for yalls help & as much as you can give is very appriciated.

tcbfan5 always nice to make new friends. There are some very knowledgeable folks on this thread, I am sure they will help you as much as possable. Good luck with your birds.

Hey folks gota question or two, as ya know we have Ms Cluck in the house well I am cleaning her cage last night and notice she needs a bath, never given a chicken a bath so please need advice as to how any of you may proceed with this task. I will do this this afternoon, will it be alright to use the hair dryer on low setting to help dry her? And I am wondering if I should try to fix a harness or sling to try to keep her leg up under her a bit better? Thanks everyone

I don't know if she already got her bath or not, but I looked at that same thing up because I wanted to know how to prep a bird for a show. You are supposed to get two deep bowls; one with warm soapy water and one with just warm water. They should be deep enough so you can soak the bird up to the base of the neck. Dip the bird in the soapy bowl and gently wash. Then dip in water bowl to rinse. I believe putting them in a crate in a warm room or near a fire is best for drying so they don't get chilled.

Here are some instructions:

I am having a great hatch! So far I have 32 chicks from 38 eggs. 13 are my cuckoo marans. There are still 6 marans eggs in the bter. Here's a picture of few cuties.

Thanks Drom Yes She has had her bath. I looked up the same and I heated the bathroom up 1st. used warm lightly soapy water then clear rinse. I only used enough in the tub to be able to drence with my hand over her rear, belly and made sure her leg was clean. She did flap her wings a couple of times, but she seemed pretty relaxed during the whole bath. I wrapped her with a dry towel and sat her there where she was still warmed by the heater (not too close)

Then 15 minutes later I used the hair dryer on low to dry most of her. She sat on Noah's lap in fresh dry towel for a while then mine. After we put her back in her clean carrier. She was eating just a few minutes ago. So the whole bath experence was fairly easy. Sorry I didn't take any photos, kinda had my hands full.

those of you with cuckoo marans, I know they are sexed easily, but how? I have 1 chick out, 2 pipped and waiting on 4 others to do something.....
thanks for the help!

Once they dry,you should see a distinct difference between male and female. The males should be lighter and may look slightly greyish, while the females will be darker and may have black coloring going down their legs, I think the shape and size of the headspot may indicate sex also, but I forget which way it is. Now,if you have a single barred rooster,it may appear to be a pullet at a young age,so the above system is not foolproof. I can guess right about 70% of the time.

Here are the best examples I can find. I am as sure that one is male and one is female as I could ever be. These chicks are 1 day old. The male is the chick in the foreground
