Gina, nice selection to show the distinct color difference!

Reminds me of one time when I went to the feedstore, and with 100% accuracy I color selected 3 Cuckoo Marans - except I had forgotten that the lighter color was the Rooster, the darker color was the Pullet! (I have brain blips/post tumor removal - I convince myself of the strangest things sometimes

I think Elizabeth is a mix too. Not neccesarily with another breed, but not pure cuckoo marans. I have a pullet that is a mix of partridge cochin and something barred/duckwing game type rooster. She looks like your marans, a LOT.

Elizabeth is from a friend who breeds Cuckoo Marans, Black Copper Marans, and Cochins (no Partridge, though). So I'm not sure how she could be a mix of anything else.

Cottage Rose, those are beautiful eggs! Bev really does breed fantastic birds. She deserves her status as Marans Queen! Of all the Marans I have hatched, her lines are by far the prettiest. I don't have eggs directly from her, but from folks who got their stock from her.

I just hatched some beautiful babies.

3 of 5 Copper Blacks that Oblio shared with me hatched. I thought I was going to get more but the last 2 seem done.

I also hatched 5 wheaten Marans from Buddy Henry. I was thinking I would get more, but 2 just now died on me and they were half way zipped. I have no idea why they didn't make it. I have 3 more eggs from him in the bator, but I am thinking this will be it.....It makes me so sad when those babies work hard and don't make it at the very end.

On a positive note, my Copper Blues and Blacks are due in a week or so. And I have one more batch coming tomorrow to set.

I started a Buying Marans" thread on the BST. Can you all add some advice to the thread? I hope to share some info to help folks buy good eggs.

I'll post my babies later!

Sorry, didn't mean to imply she was not pure marans. What I meant was that she might be different colors of marans showing through. If she is female, she would only have one copy of the barring gene, and other patterns like copper black would be able to interact with the barring gene. I saw a site last week of a guy in europe and he had all his marans running mixed and had a lot of hens that looked like that. His eggs were plenty dark, too!

Well, we had a massacre last night--I posted about it here:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=106780

Anyway, the majority of the victims were the Orpingtons, followed by the hatchery cuckoo Marans. Very interesting to note that the CB Marans had an astonishingly high survival rate, compared to the others. At this time, it looks as if we may have only lost ONE. Thank heavens for small favors.
