NP, I am so so sorry.

How awful for you. I hope you aren't being too tough on yourselves. Keeping chicks safe really is a challenge, I think.... And dogs really are natural predators of birds.

Take care and my thoughts are with you.

Thanks, Jennifer--I actually have been able to be pretty philosophical about it, I think. It was much easier than the fox attack back in the spring, which just left bodies strewn everywhere in a display of wanton waste.

I guess it's a good thing that these CB Marans are wild as jackrabbits! Perhaps we'll just try not to domesticate them too much!

Not to change the subject, but...will some of the people posting here be interested in some egg swapping, maybe, in the spring? I know I'd love to add some more color varieties, and I'll be more than happy to share eggs from this first earlyseason at no cost.

My husband bought me some chicks from Jesse Bryant, that I understand are Jeane/Grisham breeding (but have no way of verifying that, so don't take my word for gospel). Hubs knew I wanted the breed badly, and we are possibly the worst egg-hatchers on the planet, so when someone came along selling day-old chicks, he snapped them up for me.

I have to say, I'm ridiculously pleased with them so far.

I will trade with ya! I am only hatching marans eggs from Tipsy, my super dark CBM egg layer. I have seven of her pullets coming along too, so I should have some good egg numbers this spring. I also have Olive Eggers hatched and coming along, as well as some utility quality white silkies, some with vaulted skulls and good toe separation, but just saying... not great quality show wise, but since you stink at incubating, maybe they would come in handy at some point. And mottled cochins. And BBS clean legged marans of unknown quality. I fully expect them to lay light, like some other recently posted light eggs, LOL. We'll see. anyhow, I'm saying... there is a lot of eggs due in spring that should kick start you pretty good. I also have some NN hens in with marans... Should be some good stuff for you to pick from.

NP- I just hatched some Cratty feather legged cuckoos (not directly from Kelly Cratty, just someone that has those lines) and have BC from different breeders. In the spring/early summer when my all my chickens start laying I will send you eggs cheap. Check my siggy for breeds and see if you may want to trade/get some cheap. Just let me know

Most of you know my lines, from my personal pages, and why I share the current ones for free, mostly for backyard flocks and pretty eggs. They're only a 4/5 on the Marans color scale most of the time.
NP - You can have what you want, when you want, when I have it

, total strike!

I am on Bev Davis list like most, and will be just as open to promoting the breed and sharing them when I have quality to share. Anytime anyone wants to share quality eggs and lines of birds with me too, Im open to it...I'm just used to being the giver, not the getter?

I get all excited when I see all the pretty eggs and lines birds everyone has, think about asking if I can buy eggs too, then nope...I drop it....or forget...oh, I love these pretty eggs though!

NP - I am sooo happy about your Marathon BC's!! If it had been my mushball BC's, they'd have looked the dogs in the face, and been gonners!
It pays to be on the wild side!

Ooooo. Maybe there should be an official Spring Marans egg swap.

Sooo sorry to hear about your birds Ninjapoodles-that's a darn shame.

But at least some were spared so you will still have your BC eggs to look forward to anyway.
