Sussex chicks sunbathing

I caught and shared grasshoppers with both flocks this afternoon. None of the broodies shared with their chicks...it's time for the chicks to become independent from momma.

Fuzzi are you having an extra humid summer in NC? It sure has been a heavy one in MI and I am curious to know if you’re getting anything out of the ordinary there. The chicks look happy about their suntime, humidity or no!

It feels like it, although we went for weeks without any measurable rainfall. It stayed humid even then. There are mushrooms growing everywhere, even in town and next to busy streets.

I might have a home secured for the extra boys, though I will probably keep one. Since adult plumage won't be apparent for months it will be whoever gets along best with Poppa Zack.

The one having difficulty accessing the roost is green band chick. He got up there eventually.

I think Hannah is having issues. She's always laid a smaller egg, but I've not seen one from her, figured heat or soft molt (lots of feathers around the coop) was the reason. I saw her in the nest box before roosting time, went back after dark to collect her egg. No egg. Hmm. Went to check under the roost, occasionally I find an egg there. I did, but it appears to be a shelless egg, broken from a fall, and seeping into the litter.

How is she acting?
Sometimes when going into molt and production is slowing, I've noticed there can be a few glitches.

If I know a hen is expelling a soft shelled egg, then I'll direct dose her with 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for several days. (Usually 3-5days but up to 7 if the shell quality is still lacking).
The tablets are large, but they can swallow those whole no issue, but if you wish, you can always break it 1/2 and give a piece at a time.

I don't use it very often, but Calcium Citrate+D3 is the one thing I keep on hand for the hens, just in case.

Pink and yellow bands look like girls.

Orange and purple bands look like boys. Orange band screams "BOY!!!" at me.

Green, I'm not sure. I'm hoping girl.

I'll be naming the girls soon.

My gosh Fuzzi, you've got some great pics and beautiful chickens! I haven't updated my blog of feather dusters in ages. I forgot about this thread so gotta remember to check in now and then!
