I love how big the Marans eggs are. That pendesenca egg is amazing I love it! are they as flighty as I have heard?

My new pullets are in with the big girls. The one pullet has great coppering. They are getting bigger and are beautiful. My cuckoo Marans girls look great and the whole flock looks really good mixed together.

Lovely eggs there Chic-n-farmer! Ahhhh, the pride of the first dozen! Congrats! Nice eggs! Its so hard to not just keep them forever, they're just sooo pretty!
Too bad eggs dont taste as pretty as they look!
Kinda like coffee, and how it smells so good, but is doesnt taste that way? Although I learned to like the way coffee tasted when I grew up! Still doesnt taste as good as it smells though? Hmmmm. But eggs are still just nasty.

Henry, I havent let the Pene's out yet (quarantine), so I dont know how flighty they are. Eggchel says they're waaaay worse than Polish are, and I think Polish are totally neurotic, at least they have been for me...so we'll see....Their survival rate decreases greatly around here if they chose the wrong fence to hop, thats for sure! They can go several ways and be fine for hours, but just one wrong hop, and POOF - our dog June Bug is gonna get them! I tried to give June away once because she had killed my pets, but she decided to have none of that, left the place we rehomed her to (with disclosure) and showed back up at our house a month later (from 12 miles away) in a snow storm...we havent had the heart to ask her to leave again...it's Euthanasia next, I guess. Nothing has gone over her fence yet, but a really really stupid chicken MIGHT!

So Drom - I could put them with my Black Copper Roo, but how do I tell the Black Copper eggs from the Penedesenca eggs? Right now, I can tell because the Black Coppers DONT LAY EGGS! And maybe the Pene eggs will always have such neat spots! I'll keep an eye on them! That might be a good idea, but this waiting for generations of stuff is exhausting!! Look how old I'm getting waiting for these Black Copper eggs! Spanish Olive eggers? I could name the chickens Pimentos!! Cool!

I was thinking of getting a few of those hens but because they re so flighty I decided not to. Those would be great crosses! really cool birds they are very pretty. I hope those girls stay away from June.

For now, you could keep them separate with the BCM roo, and when the BCM hens begin to lay, you could switch him back and forth every day to do his duties in the two different pens. I don't think it would throw him off his game at all and you would know which eggs are which.

I'm wondering how a person can tell the difference between a black marans and a black Penedesenca....

It looks like pendesencas have white ear lobes in the picture but I am not sure they defenlty have a smaller body type then my Marans

Okay not the greatest pic when she was younger, this is a Welsummer pullet in front laying next to a little Old English Game Bird.....taken this summer, so it was several months ago...she has filled out alot more now, and I believe that they are laying eggs now! I'll still try for a shot of a grown up!
