You are such a nice chicken mom, and thanks for keeping us posted on her!

Can anyone translate the brown-red standard well enough to tell me if there are any guidelines as to the depth of the copper color on the roos? I have a couple whose "copper" is a solid, consistent deep copper (mahogany?) from noggin to saddle, and some others who have gradations of "copper," from deep to bright, almost golden. Of course, the latter are more striking to look at, but I'm thinking I should cull those boys, or at least remove them to the laying/barnyard flock. I'm uploading pics now, and will post those as soon as I can. I also have pics of my one pale hen with the cuckoo markings showing through.

Yep, with me, picking favorites is HARD, but picking rejects is EASY!

People have always told me with my dogs and horses that I am their harshest judge.

Hey Ninja!

I have taken pics of Bev Davis' Black Copper Marans for the standards that we are sending to the APA for approval. I will post a pic, and the standards in text, as soon as we choose which pics to send.

We will also post it on the group: MaransChickenClub USA (yahoo group).

Take care!

Okay, it's cold and rainy and everyone is wishing for spring.

How about a little contest?

Identify the Black Copper chicks as hen or roo. In a month or so, I'll post updated photos and hopefully we'll know! The chicks are a week old.

Whoever gets the most correct gets a dozen Marans hatching eggs.

In the event of a tie, earliest poster wins. Decision of the Judge is final. (I'm the judge!)

oooh...oooh!

Here's my guesses:

Blue chick-roo

Green chick-pullet

Orange chick-roo

White chick-pullet

Red chick-roo

Yellow chick-pullet

Wow- I really didn't mean for it to be pullet, roo, pullet, roo, etc. Oh well.
If you can take better picture of the head, that would help

Well, I can look at the pictures on her website, I guess. So we're not so much relying on the French standard, then, but one established U.S. line for our breed standard? I hope I'm still on her list if I decide to show, then.

I'm on the MCC list, but I've got over 8,000 (that is not a typo) unread emails in my box right now, and am WAY behind.

The pics on her website are outdated. I will be updating that soon. We haven't posted the pics, but NO it will not be American standard. It is French standard. I just thought it would make it easier for you to see what EXACTLY we are submitting to the APA.
The pics aren't posted to the Marans yahoo group yet, either.
The thing is, that so many different people say you need a bird that looks like this and a bird that looks like that. This will be the actual standards that have been in place all along, but unfortunately, much has been lost through some improper breeding.
We have pics of the front, back (incl. tail shape) and sides of the BCM to make it easy for the APA as well as breeders/public.

I will post the pics to this thread when we post to the group

No need to wade through emails to try and find it!

Brilliant! This is precisely what we need. Especially me.

I know that when I got to study the ILLUSTRATED Arabian horse breed standard (which by necessity was a drawing, since we've yet to produce the "perfect" Arabian), it opened whole new worlds to me.

Here's one example of the color difference I'm talking about with my own birds:

The one in the foreground is the one that appeals to me personally as being more correct, or at least more pleasing to my eye, color-wise (although the guy in the background is certainly flashier).
