hang onto that orange roo. You will need him when you start hatching out hens with less and less copper on their necks if you only breed to "ideally" marked roos, as per the standard.

Hi Marans experts. My friend bought marans eggs that are supposed to be BC, Blue Copper, cuckoos or Silver marans. I have hatched cuckoos and can say that they look nothing like mine... but other than that, I dunno!

Here are three of the chicks... any opinions?

Two chicks are pretty similar in coloring and a third is a little paler.

Whatcha all think?

I say not Black Copper, too light, most likely the blues, hopefully someone has them, I've never seen them as chicks? I dont know what a "silver cuckoo" looks like, I think mine are a darker kind, but they have dots on their heads when they're born. No matter what, Just adorable! Oh, and if they are one of the color sexed types, hmmmm, two girls and a boy, not bad!!

They don't look like cuckoos, because there is no spot on their head. They look like my BBS marans. They are smallish, like they might have hatched from pullet eggs, but that doesn't affect how they will grow up or anything. They will be fine. They look great, and the eggs look good too. I'd sure feed 'em if they were mine! (as opposed to placing them in another home)

Would reserving one or two of the roos with breast spots be sufficient for correcting loss of color in hens?

Right now (and admittedly they're still awfully young), I'm REALLY happy with my hens (aside from Ms. Cuckoo-Feathers). The roosters are tougher for me.

One more week and my wheatens will have been seperated 3 weeks so I can start setting some of their eggs and quit using them this way!! It is sooooo very hard to break them into that bowl!!

Is 3 weeks a good margin for fertility and to make sure that it's the right rooster? Just wondering cause My Frizzle project has been that long, and I just put eggs in the bator hoping it was long enough!! Yippee!
