What Chickenbottom is saying that your hen could be a Marans, or a Marans mix, that has the looks of a Marans. Did your feed store get their chicks from individuals or from a hatchery?
They are also stating that technically by Marans standards any hen that does not lay an egg that is at least a 4 on the egg color chart it is not "supposed" to be called a Marans, (not sure what they call them...the chicken formally known as a Marans?)
The stock that most hatcheries sell do not lay very dark eggs.
The REALLY dark egg layers are highly sought out, and well the light.....
I have some Marans mutts that I think are just gorgeous, and their personalities are just wonderful! If they lay a dark egg...ok...if not...ok
You said that she is 10 mos old?
The hen is chickenbottom's!
And hatchery light egged marans are usually called sports marans.
I have a few pics for ya, Chickenbottoms. Will help you not feel so confused
good cuckoo egg color (these eggs were mine):

Cuckoo Chick (this chick is mine)

Cuckoo Chicks-3 boys, 4 girls (there are also 2 small frizzles in this picture! These chicks are mine)

young cuckoos (these are my birds)

Adult cuckoos (photos from feathersite)

And finally- a frizzle Cuckoo (from feathersite)
