Oh and FYI- I haven't hatched out any chicks yet from this stock. I have just been eating and taking pictures of my eggs. But if I did ever get a Wheatie in a hatch, I would probably think of it as a prize in a box of cereal or something like that.

How many eggs can you eat a week?

We go through quite a few, here. I just got done fixing my daughter's breakfast burrito: whole-grain low-carb tortilla, Marans egg, ham, cheese, spinach. Yum! And she doesn't get hungry before lunch.

Thats funny drom.Thats exactly what I thought when i hatched out a Wheaten from a Cuckoo Marans egg! Yep she's my cereal box prize! I don't know what the odds are to hatch a Wheaten from a Cuckoo, but yes it happened to me. I'am kidda partial to her,but I'am not sure what I would get if I ever hatched her eggs when she's old enough to lay. Or even what kind of Roo to keep her with?

Any input?

I've heard of this happening with Black Coppers, but obviously it can happen with Cuckoos. I was shocked, but it was a nice surprise!

Wow, some great posts here since yesterday. Thanks for addressing the issue, Drom. I couldn't agree more. NP, I agree with your post about the egg color. That is what seems difficult to me. Getting proper conformation and dark egg color seems a bit of a challenge.

Krys, I always like your posts, and you have clearly been at this awhile. Thanks for your perspective.

Greg, those odds work for me and says a great deal. Thank you for sharing.

I am contemplating selling my wheaten Marans. I have a roo and 4 pullets that were hatched on Thansgiving day. I have so much work with the BCMs, and need the pen. Keep your eyes out folks, if you are interested, or pm me if you are. This will be a pu only.

Yes, you need to ask Greg about this. As he mentioned, I think he got a few Wheatens in his BC clutches from what he thinks was maybe one hen last year and he is going to try to breed them when they mature and see if they produce Wheatens or something else.

Ok, my hatch from Backwoods Poultry is complete!! I ended up with 3 (out of 4) BCs & 5 (out of 8) Wheatens. Not bad for shipped eggs! My Wheatens are starting to feather out and I *think* there are 3 girls and 2 boys, which would be great!! I could just be making it up at this point though...I'll have to wait a few more days until it's a little more obvious. I'll post some pics later!

I don't think the copper on the breast is such an big issue. It does not show that the bird carries wheaten. Lots of the male copper blues I brought into Britain had copper in their breasts & these came from an exibition breeder in France in 2004, they were definitey ER/ER. As plenty of people have said, just breed to a male which does not have this.....not such a big deal & really does not warrant negative comments.

To be honest, carrying wheaten isn't a big problem. Some wheatens have been crossed with copper blacks .....(the males are somewhat similar).
One can test mate for birds carrying this & then decide whether one wants to use them.
Again not something that deserves muck-slinging.

Why do we not have more discussions on type? And/or egg colour?

I think the color thing is on a lot of peoples' minds lately because there has been one person on a Marans "forum" repeatedly insisting (and trumpeting to the skies) that the proposed APA standard that the MCC has put forth is somehow completely bastardized from the French standard on the subject of color in BCs. It's a whole lot of tooth-gnashing over show standards from someone who states that they "will never show a bird." Whatever. Very confusing to me, since the MCC's proposed standard looks identical to the English translation on the French Marans Club's website.

The particular stink this person was raising was her claim that the MCC standard allowed for hens with brown body feathering, and it got the French representative all worked up. All ANYONE had to do was look at the MCC's website and read this from the breed standard of Marans, color variety copper black:

Color of Female

Disqualifications:
Brown spotting on the body.

The Hen:
The hen must be black with a copper hackle.

Anyway, I'd love to see discussions on conformation and type. I'll get the ball rolling (and this is not even really a breed-specific question, except that I'm using the Marans standard). When the standard calls for the following, as regards angle of the back:

BACK: Wide at the shoulders, long, flat, slightly tilted to the rear. Slightly more inclined then that of the female.

and
BACK: Wide at the shoulders, long, flat, slightly tilted to the rear. Slightly less inclined that that of the male.

...what is the attitude of the chicken in question? By which I mean, mine never stop moving much, and their body (and back) angle changes significantly when they're on the move. And if they're in an unfamiliar situation (like in a cage), they tend to kind of "squat" and look weird. It's proving very difficult for me to evaluate questions of angle objectively, because I can't make my chickens POSE!

Krys - I would like more info on type - I have one BC cockeral right now that I'm just waiting to see his color come in. I have no idea what what his body type should be though ( I need to do a search)

He is around 13-14 weeks old now and is just starting to show some copper on his hackles.

I'm concerned that he is a giant dinosaur clutz right now. Is this normal? Maybe he has gotten so big, so fast that the part of the brain that co-ordinates his movements hasn't caught up yet.

How long until he is done growing height -wise? He is already as tall or taller than my cuckoo pullet.

I think I'll go get a new picture of him right now.
