Well, I actually took some pictures of the silly things this evening. Light wasn't great, because it was almost 6PM, but whatever.
I think this is my favorite hen.
This hen is one of the ones who survived a horrible dog attack--her skull was visible at one point! If you look carefully, you can see where the remaining scar is on the back of her head.
After many sessions of "Rooster Idol," this is my #1 pick. Too much tail angle, I'm afraid, but it's what I have to work with. I'm hoping for some new cockerels from an upcoming hatch from shipped eggs. That's right--I'm hoping for BOYS.
This would be Roo #2, with spots on his breast, to help me out with any too-black hens. (When I saw this picture, I went back out and spread out Roo #1's wing feathers, because I had never noticed any white ones before--I couldn't find any white. So I have no idea what that is in the picture!)
And finally, we come to Suzette, a true survivor. This has to be the toughest chicken ever! She was MANGLED in the dog massacre. There was no soft tissue left on her neck and chest at all. You could plainly see her trachea, her crop, and practically the inside of her whole neck. But she just kept going, and refused to lay down and die. All we could do for her was keep it clean. She freaked out when we isolated her, so she ran with the rest of the flock the entire time she was healing. It's been several months now, and you would not believe how much better she looks!
