So, I suppose I should probably put this in the incubation section or something, but since people say the Marans eggs are a little different than other hatching eggs, I thought I would take a little poll here of all the fine Marans breeders and ask you what type of incubator you prefer to use, what your hatch rate has been with it and what things you think are tricky about hatching Marans eggs (as opposed to other breeds)

I think I got my first Wheaten! I bought some blue copper marans eggs from bishopschickens and one hatched a day early today and it is pale yellow all over with faint blue tinge on the back! Maybe it will be a blue wheaten???!!! I will try to get a pic tomorrow in natural light.

I have only had marans of different varieties and I have seen the same hen color vary between dark brick to nearly white. This week my niece that is loud, fast and has ADD has been to visit the chickens and "played" with them, feeding them leaves, incessantly checking for eggs, tipping over waters by accident, shouting in excitement when she found an egg, and let me tell you, there were several eggs short today and the color is a LOT lighter than it was a few days ago. I have noticed the color lighten after a bad storm, a change of feed, or for no reason and then darken back up in a couple of weeks. I am new and learning still, but I think that some hens, or bloodlines stay darker longer, and some start out dark and lighten sooner and the eggs stay mediocre barely four or even less over most of the laying season, regardless of the original dark color they laid. Last year one of my hens laid REALLY light! See them below with the green eggs. Next season she laid dark, and you can't tell which of her eggs is in the box below... I just know that I don't know zip when it comes to marans egg color predicting over time.
