I wish someone would post some pictures of Birchen eggs. Anyone keep Birchens out there?

I've got BBS birchens. They did NOT come from dark eggs. OTOH Bev is working on birchens (mine did not come from Bev), and they probably will lay dark once she's got em firmly established.

Anyone who is interested in getting into birchens needs to watch out for birchen roos who are carrying the gold gene. You can tell that especially by yellowness in the saddle feathers. In looking at lots of pics on the internet, it seems to me that MANY of the "birchens" being sold currently are carrying gold.

Bummer. They're such cool

looking birds. They're dressed in formal wear. Too bad they are not so far along in development.

This is my mystery chick again.... It's been over a month since I posted this guy and I was going to get more photos of him at the time, but everything got busy... Here are a few photos from today. He's a Marans chick that I got with two other “mysteries” that turned out to be Wheaten hens.

Is he just a "sport"?

Get a load of this chick that hatched yesterday!!! I thought the egg might be a double yolker but I have wanted to hatch some of this hen's eggs because she has consistently laid such big eggs... They say not to set over size eggs, but that is all she lays... She is a clean legged splash marans. Anyhow, hatchd a half dozen of her chicks yesterday!!! YAY! This is th biggest one and I HOPE it's a roo!

I'm thinking blue. His mama is splash, and the roo that is in there is black. There was a splash roo in there but I re-homed him weeks ago (because he couldn't inseminate this exact hen!) and although there is a chance he is the daddy, it would be the longest of long shots, but hey, stranger things have happened. There was a blue cuckoo next door that occasionally breached the door but I don't think he got a chance to breed anyone... there was one morning that he spent the night in there though... now that I think of it... he was all bloodied the next day from mr BIG BLACK roo so I just figured he was beat to a pulp and never got a chance at any girls either, but then... there is a faint white spot on the head... the splash roo was carried a single cuckoo gene. I didn't want cuckoos, but if this turns out to be one... oh well, I'm KEEPING him anyhow, even if it is just to eat.
