well, I haven't sold any of mine, but just from observing others, the price seems to vary widely for roosters. If you have a very correct rooster that hatched from a very dark egg and for some reason you can't keep him, I think there are plenty of people looking for very nice roosters who would pay a good price. But If you are just trying to place the ones that didn't make the grade in your breeding or show pen, then asking for much less is appropriate. Started trios seem very easy to place-lots of people want to buy started trios. It takes the guessing out of it-you know exactly what you are getting.

You might want to visit eggbid.com and see what people are asking for their started stock.

People talked about doing that last year but it never did happen.

I think maybe because of the complications with mixing lines and such.
I hope some folks sent Ninja Poodles some eggs-she lost her whole flock of about 40 or so to a predator. And I haven't seen her post any since.

What percentage rate of hatch and fertility do people get in marans (Copper black marans)? We tried with a hatch of our own stock ( 9 eggs set) and got 66% (6) clear and 33% (3) dead in shell (DIS) this was under a broody. So decided to buy an incubator and set 18 eggs own stock again. Got 33% (6) clear, 38.85% (7) DIS and 27.75% (5) chicks. Then one chick which was weak and not growing, i put down. The incubator was running at 37.5 C and 45% humidity for the first 18 days, then increased to 65% until the incubator was turned off.

I am in the UK, but was just wondering.

I am very new to the maran breed...i bought 2 black maran hens and dont know much about them. They came from the David Hansprizier line...i might be wrong on the spelling. Does anyone have any pictures of Black marans or any information on the David Hansprasier line?

OOHH! Never thought of that I keep 2 flocks seperate but they are both from the same line...I keep show potential and ones I am working on..Both from wade jeane lines...

I feel so sad for Ninja Poodles

I havent seen her posts here for a while..I just sent eggs to someone in the club that lost her whole flock to racoons..I sure hope she gets a good hatch...

I pray ever night that racoons dont get in my coop.I think it's secure but racoons are pretty smart...

Well, I am definitely not a hatching maven but there are lots of people on this site and this thread who have quite a bit of experience hatching out BCM and other Marans varieties and hopefully they will respond for you. I have never heard that the breed has lower than normal hatch rates compared with other Marans varieties or other breeds.
I have heard some people say that they adjust the humidity slightly differently for Marans and that very dark eggs may be a bit more challenging to incubate.

There are not a lot of people breeding them in the US. I haven't heard heard of that line, but I am mainly familiar with Black Copper lines and breeders.
Definitely visit this link for the French translation of the variety description and the link to the French Standard for Black Marans:

Yes, they are crafty. I should knock wood when I say this, but I haven't had any problems yet I think because I built the coop very close to the house and an outdoor light stays on all night. I also built all the coop walls with 1/2 inch hardware cloth inside 2x6 frames. But I have a very small flock so it was fairly small and easy to build.

I have raccoons and skunks on my property at night. Someone told me skunks can squeeze through extremely small spaces, so I filled in every space that was more than an inch square in corners and where the roof met the mesh panels and the door, etc.

I get more worried in the day time when I have them turned out loose to free range. There are dogs in my neighborhood and lots of hawks. I walked out one day when I had everybody turned out and saw a coyote making her way in broad daylight up my pasture to the house. Soon as she saw me she took off but she was headed toward the chickens for a free lunch.
