Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Darris, I LOVE your hen in the pic! She's got (IMO) the perfect amout of copper in her hackles, and she appears to be nice & stocky. I like your boy, too - will be anxious to see him at about a year - looks like he's got a bit of filling out to do, but very nice! Nice eggs, as well! They have the reddish hue that Marans eggs should have, very uniform in size, as well. And that beautiful sheen...VERY nice!!

I hope you guys don't mind, but I am going to try and post this here every now and then for newbies that post pics and come to view pics to compare to what they have. I am seeing more and more pics posted of people's marans...that aren't marans...mind you, that the person posting, usually just plain does not know and is not trying to "pull the wool over someone's eyes". I also KNOW for a fact (and this is very sad), that many people have bought nice dark eggs online, (what they thought to be marans) and have ended up w/ Barnevelder mix or Leghorn mix, or what-not.

Sometimes, I'm not sure if posters are breeding this way on purpose for a different breed....or what. But, just want to make sure that newbies don't come on and see pics of a Marans and think it's the standard.

Also, want to remind that if an egg is a 3 or under on the shade card(s), it is not considered a Marans egg. I have a Wheatens who lays 2 & 3's and I would never sell her eggs as hatching eggs. She is our sole egg layer for eating

So...here are the BCM standards given to APA:

Black Copper Marans Standard

Color of Male

Disqualifications:

Brown triangular wing bay
Golden or Straw colored hackles.
Yellow on shanks or toes.
White ear lobes.
Feathers on middle or inner toes.

Here are some french general disqualifications:
Lack of size; white or yellow
ear-lobes; light-coloured or black eyes;
tarsi without feathers, black or yellow;
triangular body frame;
horizontal or leaning forward body.
Cock weighing less than 3 kg;
Hen weighing less than 2.2 kg.

The cock:
The Ideal specimen will represent a color balance of Black and Copper. The cock must be Black with Copper finery, the hackles and the small of the back are Copper colored, with a Black or slightly reddish-brown marked breast.


Comb, Face, Wattles and Earlobes: Bright red. 5 points, but used to be 7 points, so this may change agaiN!

Beak: Dark Horn.

Eyes: Reddish Bay.

Shanks and Toes: Dark Slate, bottom of feet pinkish white.

Head: Deep Strong Red Copper color.

Neck:
Hackle: Deep Copper color. ( mid-coppery to red-coppery, but not golden or straw colored )
Front of neck: Black with narrow lacing of deep Copper.

Back:
Back: Lustrous Deep Copper.
Saddle: Deep Copper color matching the hackle.
Tail:
Main Tail: Black with slight luster.
Sickles and Coverts: Lustrous black with glints of beetle Green.

Wings:
Shoulders: Mahogany Red color.
Bows: Lustrous Deep Copper to match back.
Coverts: Lustrous black forming a black armband.
Primaries: Black.
Secondaries: Black, ( exposed portion forms a lustrous Black Triangular wing bay ).

Breast: Black or with slightly Copper marks.

Body and Stern: Black.

Legs & Lower Thighs: Black

Shank and Toe Feathering: Black.

Ear Down: Brown


Color of Female

Disqualifications: Brown spotting on the body.

The Hen:
The hen must be black with a copper hackle.

Comb, Face, Wattles and Earlobes: Bright red.

Beak: Dark horn.

Eyes: Reddish bay.

Shanks and Toes: Dark Slate, bottom of feet pinkish white.

Head: Copper. ( varying from mid-copper to red-copper ).

Neck:
Hackle—Copper with a black-colored tip. ( spreading out almost down to the breast ).
Front of neck—Copper

Back: Black.

Tail: Black.

Wings: Black.

Breast: Black.

Body and Stern: Black.

Legs & Lower Thighs—Black.

Shank and Toe Feathering—Black.

Color of Male

Disqualifications:
Spotted Breast. Black or no Triangular wing bays at all.

The Cock:
Wheat cocks are black, with a coppery-red coat, and so looking like the Black Copper cocks except as for the triangular wing mirror which is brown.

Comb, Face, Wattles and Earlobes: Bright red.

Beak: Light horn shading to white at tip.

Eyes: Reddish bay.

Shanks and Toes: Pinkish white.

Head: Light orange, free from dark feathers.
( varying from golden-red to brown-red )

The hens coat is a wheat color (the color of the grains of wheat). Each feather has a lighter staff and edge. Head and hackles are a rich wheaten color. The breast and the all underside of the body are cream colored. The secondary color is whitish.

WINGS: Short, held close to the body, carriage nearly horizontal.
BREAST: Strong, broad, and full, well rounded when viewed from both the front and side.
BACK: Wide at the shoulders, long, flat, slightly tilted to the rear. Slightly more inclined then that of the female.
BODY AND FLUFF: Body deep, long and broad, especially through the shoulders and carried high. Overall rectangular in shape. Fluff medium in length.

lildinkem... Yours is a Silver Birchen right? ...or I think it's also called Black Birchen as opposed to the Blue Birchen...correct me if I'm wrong. Absolutely gorgeous bird by the way!!! I'd like to find room for a flock of those too, lol! It's so hard to choose just one or two colors!

I think Rustyswomans bird may be what they call "Silver" though.
