Think good thoughts for me... My third set of shipped eggs are due to hatch at the end of the week. This is my third try for GCMs... I didn't candle, I've just let em roll. (For fear of dropping one.) And because as dark as Nivtups eggs are it's pointless. Now the waiting gets worse...

She was my very best quality hen and my emotional favorite.

I know what you mean. I lost my favourite chicken last year (something fell down in the henhouse & she would have to be the on on whom it landed).

She was the only one out of all of my Marans who was close, imo, to being just right. And a really bold, extrovert sort.

I posted him several times over the past week or two and asked for a critique, and only rustyswoman has made a comment.

He's at post #3429. The first pic is a bit older, the last ones more recent. I'd like to know what areas I need to work on, or what traits I need to bring in. He's still a Blue Wheaten cockerel, about 6 or 7 months old, and finally starting to bulk up over the last few weeks.

Sorry, I think shortly after that a strange, anonymous person wandered in to the thread and starting pelting Amazondoc with insults-I think it distracted everyone

Anyway, I don't have the Wheatens so I can't say I am any kind of expert. He looks soooo sweet. Who did you get him from?
How old is he? They change so much you know in the first year. I had one who looked much more mature than the others at 8 months and another that was rangy looking all the way up to a couple months ago and now at a year and 3 months, all of sudden he looks perfectly regal. Filled out everywhere! And his tail set even looks better. Your boy looks young now and he is going to fill out a lot.
By the way, you're right, the whitish-pink feet are correct for the Wheatens. We were just referring to the Birchens and Brown-red when we were discussing the slate colored feet and legs.
He looks good to me right now. I would definitely hang on to him if he were mine.
As he fills out and matures, you will be able to get a better take on how his confirmation and tail set will be-I'll bet he ends up beautiful.
I don't know about the red on the breasts with Wheatens and if that goes away as they mature or not. It doesn't look like much though.​

Thank you Drom! I was hoping you didn't see any obvious flaws. I'm pretty new to Marans really and just didn't want to be overlooking anything important. He's just 6 or 7 months old right now, and I do think he's starting to fill out now, just over the past 2 or 3 weeks. If he's anything like the other male I have from the same line (Bev Davis'), he should look really nice in a few more months.​

So what do you guys use for candling these dark eggs? I've used my maglite a few times. If the eggs are clear (not developing at all), I can usually see some light pass through tiny little specks in the dark finish, but if there is any development at all, I can't see a darn thing!​

They just finished up there molt and I put artificial light in the coop so hopefully I will get some eggs sometime soon.

I took a few pics of the BCM's yesterday. There are a couple pics of my humongous roo. He has, in my opinion, pretty good Marans type. His color is off a bit though. As a youngster, he started out almost totally black and started coloring in slowly as he got older. I'm happy with his hackle and wing color, but his saddle feathers are very slowly coming in red. Both of my adult roos are around 8 months old and are huge. They were both very "robust" and thick, right from an early age. I currently have about 60 chicks between 3 to 6 weeks old from him to sort through. I already see some really nice prospects. My other breeder roo also has the same "thick" type, but he also has obvious yellowing in his hackles

I'm really happy with the type of my hens. They are also hefty and round. My egg color could use a little work though, and I hope to improve it once I'm seeing consistency in my offspring with birds looking more to the breed standard.

This is Abomidable, a BIG BOY, from a fellow BYCer Amy Buboltz, off the top of my head can not remember the exact lines she has. He is a nice boy.

This is Abner, another Amy Buboltz boy. I like him alot.

In this pic, I have culled out two of the 4 cockerels. Leaving the Wheaten looking boy from Thom Dean and a fellow BYCer Emily. I think Presley Grisham are in the cockerel on the left.

I really like Bruno, my Birchen Roo from Betty Jo Aldrich.

I am down to 7 cockerels/Roo not including Bruno. I hope to pop off pics tomorrow of the girls
