I have heard some say that they use higher humidity on Marans than others.

Good luck with your hatch.

I thought people were recommending lower humidity during incubation, but if they haven't had it now you wouldn't want to reduce it for hatch.

Personally, I've never done anything any different. But I can imagine with special bought eggs one would want to do everything which might possibly help.

I believe it was bargain and Wynette that both said they use a bit higher humidty from day 18 - 21. Just a bit higher. I usually aim for 65%, and now am trying for 68% or so. I do have 1 Marans pip! YAY!

Beautiful birds! I also have some Thom Dean birds in my line. His birds are big. If anyone needs to increase the overall size of their BCM flock, I would highly reccomend adding a Thom Dean bird or 2.

Just wanted to show pictures of my first cuckoo marans X BC cross. Mom was the cuckoo so the pullets all start off black. This girl is now has some copper in her neck feathers. She is 12 weeks and is good sized. I was wanting some sex - linked birds that might have the dark egg gene. My cuckoo doesn't lay dark eggs at all but my BCM roo came from an incredibly dark egg. We will see in a few more months if it worked. I had two more of this same cross but the youngest one (about 5 weeks) got picked off by a hawk the other day. The other one is about 8 weeks old.

She was very scared to be inside so she hunched down at first:

Then she had to poke her head out and look around:

I had my best hatching results doing a variation of the dry incubation method. It is called forgetting about the incubator. Letting the humidity get down to the 35% range and then add water. I do not even shut off the auto turner anymore either. And still hatch near 90%.

lildinkem, I really enjoyed your BYC page...especially the photo showing the one legged trick the Ameraucanas can do, lol! All your dogs are just gorgeous!

pbjmaker, I hope the cuckoo x BC project works out for you.

Hurrah! My first BCM eggs! I have been waiting, and waiting! I know that many of you all have eggs much darker, but I am thrilled! These are from a pullet that came to me as hatching eggs from Bargain - Thanks, Nancy! I also have a roo from those eggs, and another BCM hen I got as a chick locally (she is about a month younger and hasn't started to lay yet). They are a bit darker than they appear - the flash from the camera washes them out some.
