This is my BYC page, that I am putting pictures of my marans, as they grow. I see some are clean legs and others are not. They are still young. Feel free to critique. My feelings will NOT be hurt! Honestly, I have no idea what I have ... good or bad! LOL BUT, I sure do want to learn. I will try to get better pictures posted.

Here are some oics of my Marans. The first is a cuckoo hen, the second and third were supposed to be golden cuckoos but don't look like the pics I see of other golden cuckoos. Can someone tell me what this color is? Is there some Wheaten in them? The one has some barring but the color is more red than gold. These just turned 5 mos. Any help is appreciated.

Poor girl, I bet she's walking bow-legged today.

I also bet that's a double-yolker. When my ducks got started laying this fall, I got double-yolkers every day for what seemed like a loooooong time!

ya i would say that the last 2 of the pics are wheaten x cuckoo... do you have any roosters from that batch??? it would be easier to tell i think...

I did get one rooster but he's the right color, cuckoo with gold hackles and saddle. Well, I like them anyway, I'll just use them for laying hens instead of breeding. Thanks for your help.

-I don't think anyone responded to this.
Rustywoman, if you go to this link which is the variety description for the Brown-Red at the MCF site and scroll down the page past the little pics of the chick and the egg to the section titled "Description of the Brown Red Cock" they provide some really great detail and information on ear tuffs, and shoulders and on a proper balance of color:

I don't know that much about it, so don't quote me, but I think there are a couple different recipes for golden cuckoos that involve crossing silver cuckoo x black-tailed buff or silver cuckoo x brown-red. That one looks to me like maybe she has some black tailed buff genes.

I should add, I don't know how many people actually work with black-tailed buffs, I think they are not very common here but I do see pictures posted occasionally of black-tailed buffs and there might be some people working on those crosses with them.
