I'm new to all this Marans info, and am just trying to learn. When you say, "If you look at the old lines they didn't have these problems, they breed true, are healthy, productive birds." .... what lines would these be? I mean, I thought Marans were relatively new in the United States. Or, are you referring to lines in France? How many, "original," lines are there noted to be in the USA?
So, if I understand you correctly, you're preference is to never introduce new blood into your established line??? I have read many differing opinions on the subject. I find this another interesting topic. I expect many experiment with both ways.
I agree with Wynette, "the proof's in the puddin'!" I'm anxious and excited to see how my birds turn out!
personally I dont think anything should be line bred for to long. I am not sure why many Marans breeders dont mix lines. I have been and will be adding 2 more different blood lines this year. I cull out anything that does not come close to the standard they are working on and will then cull once I see egg color if it is not dark enough. I have read mixing lines produces lighter eggs but I dont see why that would be true. In another few years I will just call y line Susan's line and be done with listing the various breeders that my sellers claim to have had. At this point I think very few strains are the exact same DNA as what the most famous breeders have. ie my lines should be from Wade Jeanne and Bev Davis but who really knows for sure, since I did not get them from them directly.

i was thinking the same thing.. but i know nothing on genetics... but if you breed mixing lines and you get great birds from great stock, and you prove that new line, what's the difference... these original breeders got their birds somewhere.. and then their line got known based on their name.. it wasn't originally their line... it wasn't poofed into existence in their yard with fairy dust.....
Kathyinmo anxiously awaiting seeing your pretty babies Marans!!!!! Fingers crossed and prayers flowing for you. I've got 2 feathers tucked in each ear.....Giving it my best!

Thank you, Ms Nancy. Now, I really want to see a picture of the feathers in your ears! LOL
I do hope to have a good hatch. All the controversy on humidity level for hatch concerns me. My plan is to just keep it the same as all the others. Last time, when I hatched Wynette's eggs (including Marans), they seemed to do fine. So, the plan is to keep it the same!
