Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

I had a combination of both types in my clutches. Some had white markings on their faces and some did not, however; I will say that the ones with the white markings were more correct as adults than the dark-faced ones, which makes me wonder about it. But I have never heard any of the really experienced breeders mention anything about that specifically.

Wow, look at the difference in size and color on her 2nd egg. Mine did the same thing. Which Wheaten pen is she from, your Presley or Davis?

I have just started hatching BCMs. The parents tend to mossiness. Most of the chicks have small amounts of brown in their baby down -- while one, the chick with the most white in its face, has absolutely no brown showing (yet). You can bet that I'll be keeping track of how those chicks turn out!

I would just like to pay Homage to the breeders here... Serious or silly.. you guys/gals that come on here and give us a history lesson or a clue as to what works.... THANKS... It takes a lot of different ingredients to make good soup. If any of you "old dogs" would like to put your personal sense in on my pm and help me to do the best for the breed... please advise me ... I love the history lessons also. I learn so much on this forum.... Even when it gets colorful so much is gleaned... Without passion the journey would have very little luster.... Again thanks across the board!!!

I just hatched these a couple days ago and you can see the diversity of white coloring on their faces. Maybe it's just the particular lines/crosses that I'm working with, but they all usually mature out pretty much the same no matter what they started as. Also, I have never ended up with a mossy one, nor have I ever had any with the brownish colored down as previously mentioned. It's really interesting how many different "occurances" happen with so many different breeders, considering how relatively small the actual size of the BCM gene pool is in this country.

Just thought of a question for all you marans genetic gurus.... What if: A person recieves birds with crossed lines say presley/jeanne (if this is even a cross) and then recieves birds from another breeder touting Wade Jeanne and another line... (fill one in here)... Will the product be inferior in the egg color??? If crossing lines creates a lighter egg then would this be considered crossing? Also... can someone recite the available lines that shouldn't be crossed?

I don't think anyone has figured things out with that much detail. You are at risk of losing egg color at least temporarily if you cross lines, but that doesn't mean that crossing lines is a bad thing in the long run, or that you will *necessarily* lose egg color by doing so.

Thanks Kathyinmo for the thread... WHAHOO... I am off to read it now... Temporary color loss of color is no biggy...thanks
