These are the eggs they hatched from. They were actually darker than the photo shows, but the flash washed the color out. All from the same flock, which has never had, "new blood," added, since arrival in the USA (if that means anything).

Kathy, my BCM's of about 2-3 weeks ago have chicks like the brownish one of yours. I have at least 1/2 and 1/2 mix. I would like to know too.
I noticed that the brownish ones do not have white tips on their wings either.

Don't know if this will help but regarding the "Mossiness" I had two chicks like that last summer, now laying and mature hens, they are completely black bodied but their hackle color is too brassy. They both lay very dark eggs. I also have one of those colored babies in the brooder she also came out of one of the darkest eggs, she is a test hatch destined for the laying flock. I will try to post photo later today of both bird and egg. May not be right but I do leave the two older gals in a breeding pen because of their egg color. It may take me quite a bit of time but I would rather not lose egg color and type over feather coloring. They are in with my Copper Splash boy at the moment hoping this TEST pairing will bring me some nice blues with great egg color, who knows its worth a shot, right?...and I can always use fresh layers for the laying flock.

The mossies do have a nice dark egg. I have had that happen mostly through the blue lines though... I wonder if that is a blue line trait???? Anyone know... Blue was developed out of what? I know it isn't a standard color by even the french...Could this be why?

Don't cull your little brownish wing chick. I have hatched bunches of black copper chicks, and the brownies pop up on occasion. I have raised a few just to see what happened. They turned out to be very handsome roos. None displayed mossinesss as adults. My birds are Wade Jeane stock and I've never seen mossiness in any as adults.

Here is an old photo of brownies among bc juveniles. You can still see the brown wings.

When you all talk about mossiness - are you talking about a greenish tinge to the feathers? (when I think of moss - I think a dark, earthy green)
