Ya know... Bev said it takes 5 years to develop a good flock.... I bet that is probably the answer... How many generations that is..... Well IDK again. I haven't been breeding that long yet and I do not have a finished flock yet...Hope to get there!!! My breakfast pen has grown proportionally!!!! ha ha...

That depends on which "bad" traits you're trying to get rid of. Some traits are dominant -- these are easy to spot and cull. Some traits are recessive -- these can be very hard to get rid of, because they can hide without being visible. And even worse, some traits require a combination of specific genes. So it all depends!

Enjoy the journey... For the road is paved with beautiful breakfast eggs..

It is fun to think that you can be a "part" of the process. Or just keep beautiful backyard egg layers... There is no rule on whether you have to further the breed or just enjoy your partidge/salmon/bc.... egglayer... (She can serve the simple purpose of being a nice chicken that makes you smile a little).... I have two like that... The egg color is like Dorthy's ruby red slippers in "Wizard of Oz" with that exceptional brightness that is talked about... I personally get great joy out of eating those little rubies....I haven't bred them forward for marans and I haven't had a problem with the mossiness from their line....ever. I also do not have any egg layers with that quality in the egg either... two pens....best of both worlds

Ok hit me with the recessive traits that are hard to get rid of please. Might as well know now...

see now, here's my take on it. Those five years are going to pass, whether you spend it improving your flock or doing something else... may as well spend your time improving your flock I say...
