Ya know.... I find that to be true as well. I got my first pullet eggs at 7 months... And then you still wait to see if they are going to hold their color etc.... I would say about 8/9 months before the hen produces enough to know whether she will be part of the program or not. Good point!!! Probably 8 generations...

No I didn't hatch her. I got her as a chick. I was looking at my Welsummers a few minutes ago and it looks to me that they have salmon (pinkish) breast feathers. I got them a few weeks ago and haven't had a chance to really look at them.

Thanks for the insight and info. So I guess the best thing I can do with her is to sell her, not as a Golden Salmon Marans or put her in with my black Ameraucana cock and make some pretty feather legged Easter Eggers.

Here are a couple of eggs my BCM hens laid today. The first two pictures are the same egg one side is swirled and the other is solid. I really like the second egg with the speckeled finish!

What causes this swirl finish?

Don't know what causes it, I do know we see them occasionally. Seems like it has extra calcium on them when they show up around here.

I am now the proud owner of 6 (working on 7) Golden Cuckoo Marans! Plus one BCMarans and hopefully a few more if they can get out of those eggs. I have 3 more pips with the BCM's and it is seeming like forever, but that's because the Golden Cuckoo Marans all hatched out this morning.
I didn't know that they could vary in color pattern so much. The are beautiful chicks! I can't wait to see them all grown up and I hope I get some Roos--they are gorgeous!
