Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Really she is a splash... When crossed on black she produces blue....every time... that is the genetics...In the pic you cannot see the stripes but they are there.... Just not as spotted as yours... The genes on this bird smeared it all over.. In some places she is white. My guess would be she had a parent with strong blue on the neck.. the real dark and that is why she maintained lacing around her neck feathers... But when I cross her and I have lots... her babies are blue. You can find it in different breeds that color out similarly... I can't imagine that I own the only one with this pattern. Anyone out there have a bird like mine????

I have more pictures. I will post them. If you look back in my post # 4704, you can see some of the blue in the coop yard. Some of those are blue Marans (I thought that's what there were!). Some are Jersey Giants, also ....

I will go fetch some close up pictures, and ask here!

These are old pictures, when they were 11 -12 weeks old ... Aren't these all blue Marans?

Hhmmm, I think this is a black and a blue (butt), not sure.

The one in the background ..... ??? Blue (light blue?) (BCM, Birchen, Blue)

They all look blue to me... They have different amount of lacing on their feathers... There is no Lavender Marans...(however her base color is a lavender color) Some splash chickens often times get mixed up with the lavenders due to the way the blue is muted... On my hen note the dark wing feather and the stripes on her tail... She also has stripes of blue on her chest that are not that obvious in the photo..Her overall body color resembles Lavender but it isn't... It must be a bad photo... I will get some different ones.. I didn't know posting a pic of my girl was going to generate so much confusion. I think there is a thread on here somewhere that talks about the blue genetics...I will see if I can find it.

Light Blue, blue, blue, blue, copper blue, copper blue, Light blue w/splash in the background and IDK..... looks like a cuckoo birchen cross or something...not a desirable color. In the blue gene itself depending on how many outcrossings have been done.. regulates the quality of the lacing... If you want a strong lacing then you don't keep breeding the offspring to each other but rather back to the parents or a black mate otherwise you lose that good lace quality. There is a significant difference in the quality of the blue birds....as you can see in your own yard.
