Marans Thread for Posting Pics of Your Eggs, Chicks and Chickens

Thanks Drom... love the idea of a drama free zone.

Here is what I know after some painstaking research. The gene that can cause webbing is linked to the gene that is responsible for feathered shanks. It is autosomal dominant so any chicken carrying it in theroy should show it expressed... which means it should be the easiest of problems to fix... you pick out any chick that has it and cull it... Sounds simple and I sure hope it is because if so I have probably found my guilty pullett and she is now in isolation awaiting a trip to a friends laying flock. Her case is so very mild that I actually overlooked it until it expressed itself in chicks from my eggs.

Where I am running into a problem is in that a lot of people (most people) that buy hatching eggs are not breeders or even experienced bird owners and have not researched the breeds they are planing to raise. I actually still have people ask me if I can sex eggs in the shell... as in "can you only send me girls, please? I really don't need a rooster." So a lot of education has to go into this.

It was only a few pages back that someone posted that they got wheatens from Wade Jean black coppers... immediately someone else chimed in that the person was due a refund because the birds were not 'pure'. Helping new folks understand that some most birds (or anything that is born in litters or clutches) will have some offspring that does not resemble the parent stock or is defective is a big job. I work in human medicine, obstetrics, and we see human babies with defects all the time, stuff happens. Wade's birds have always thrown wheaties... and maybe always will. They are still awful nice.

I feel like this is a quality flock... if I didn't I'd sell them for layers and do something else. Marans in general have a long way to go and I have worked out plenty of issues already. But I don't want to deal with the 'bad reputation' factor over these birds and have it affect the breeds I have raised and sold for years. So I am posting here and I will include some kind of blurb on my auctions... and if it is a huge issue even with that I will make lots of omelets;)

What's a presley influence ?? it would have to be something everyone else has access to ..... as his birds(marans) are just like most everyone else's , (think about it-where did his come from lol)

we've had two people with imports over the last several years that started the BCM craze and Presley was not one of the importers neither was Wade Jean .

Now there might be (has to be) a few illegal imports who have not(will not) revealed this to the general public ..... (but the main "TWO" contribute the most to the BCM bloodlines today!!!!) .

To me the Dark Egg color is what it's all about nomatter Barred- Cuckoo- BC - BlueC -Mossy- etc , i know show is in a lot of people's minds these days and i guess that's good but showing an animal "allways" takes away from it's original purpose (every single time) .

Here is what I got today... Not exceptionally dark for my crew but certainly hatchable... It is hard to have a bator full!!! Sorry about the light thing ....It is so hard to get an accurate pic... My hens have been in a STEADY lay since October...So about 6 months.... When they first start some of their eggs are so dark it is almost inconcievable... Deep burgundy... one nearly black... I should have photographed early on... I actually did but with a phone and it didn't work out well... I just got a camera for X-mas so that is a lot of help.

Hi guys my hubby has fallin maddly in love with the marans. He currently has 3 youngins "teenagers" and 3 new peeps. They are out of 2 very well known breeders of marans. Out of the 2 older roos it is starting to look like one will be a bcm will the other looks to have a light silver sheen to his neck other than that he is solid in color. The hen looks to solid black. Now as for the 3 tiny peeps they are 1 cuckoo, 1 blue or might be splash, 1 bcm. All 6 of them have feathering on the shanks to the outside toe. I hope to post their pic. soon to get a feel of what ya'll think the true coloring is called. He is wanting to breed these birds so any info or help you have to offer please do. We are not to sure on who will go with how pen wise when they are old if it even matters on that or not. We don't have to worry right at the moment due to their ages but anything you can tell us, we will be grateful for. Thanks

Don't cross lines between Cuckoo and BC Marans... It causes loss of egg color...

Yea, that one on the table is just like the glossy red ones I get. They have such a globular shape you can not tell which end is up. Very nice!
And I hate taking pics inside-I take them out side to snap pics. But what a beautiful picture with the spring flowers and the tablecloth!!

This is a drama free zone, so maybe I should not respond to this.

I don't understand what you mean by: showing an animal "allways" takes away from it's original purpose (every single time) I just don't get it.

As far as the origins of the Marans .... awwww, come on, that's all history. They are here now, and we are all interested in them, in one way or another. Enjoy our thread!

Thanks Drom... I am so full of spring fever!!! I love the glossies... I wish I hadn't culled so heavily on the mossies... I know better next round... I like conformation but the eggies is where it is at for me... And those ruby reds.... You just can't beat those little round shiney ones... Oh and I get one like Pinkchicks.... It is positively purple... Haven't had one lately...Hen went broody... In fact I have 3 broodies... They chose not to take the stroll with Sir Charles today (roos name)
