Oh and I am sending two roos to freezer camp for bad behavior.... My only producing pen...(breakfast)... the roos have taken to eating the eggies..... (I do not know why)... They are the best fed animals on the planet!!! the lengths I go to are staggering... Making homemade suet treats and including tumeric and celery seed and nuts and berries... Bad chickens....I bet they taste delicious...

I love collecting eggs, more so now since the Marans have starting laying! Oh, what fun. I get about a dozen dark eggs a day. Today I got my first funny looking one .... the kind that looks dark when it is wet, but dries to a chalky look.

My grandson is coming for a 4 day weekend on April Fools Day. So, I stuck a few eggs in the bator, so he can watch a hatch. He is almost 6.

OK... It's my first time incubating and hatching as well as first time for everything else. Today is my day 20 for my 14 Wheaton Marans Eggs from Wheaties and I had to run on here and announce that I have found 6 eggs pipped and I am so excited to see that there is movement and life. I didnt candle or handle the eggs at all so the nervousness of not knowing if I was doing ANYTHING right and if any at all were alive was killing me. I can't believe just how excited I am. i feel like im skipping around my house today LOL... I bet you all are laughing at me. I just had to get on to share. Pictures will be available as soon as I have more. YAY

ZGoatlady - You're the one who has the Marans for sale in Emunclaw? Wow, I never made the connection until I saw that avatar of yours. Beautiful eggs.

Question for you guys: I have a couple Marans roos, I now find, with my pullets. They're just a month old and starting to develop their first copper coloring. Well, only one is, really. He's always been a definite "He" and the thing I question and worry about, is, ever since he was a couple weeks old, he's always had a slight brown tinge on the tip of almost every feather of his. They're taming down now, but still evident on his wings, chest, and shoulders. Does this mean he's going to have far too much coppering, and perhaps a red chest? Please tell me that isn't the case. . . Because out of my current 4 Marans chicks, he's the only one with any brown or copper in him, and it isn't just age or growth - He's had these brown tips for weeks, and the others have always been black. Any thoughts?

If you need pics, tell me.

Of course we need pics!

But I think I know what youre talking about. I have a hen that was the same way, now she makes my breakfast! She has way too much brown in her, kind of a "Partridge" colored. She lays great eggs, they taste great anyway!

I think someone once said that she had carried too much of the Wheaton gene thru, might be ok for breeding but will probably throw either Wheaton or the same as her on occasion, so I opted for the cull pen for mine.

we are not laughing at you were laughing with u . hatching eggs is so much fun and just be glad your working with wheaten marans (there always perfect ).... where did you get your eggs ? i hatched 5 today to add to my flock .7 eggs i had were fresh and the others were old as the hills .....

This is what I'm talking about. Right now he's a tiny bit more mature, and his copper hackles are coming in - But, this weird brown smut sort of stuff is worrying me. I sure hope it will just disappear, but even if it does - It looks to me like some sort of Wheaten leakage, or just something I shouldn't be putting in the latter breeding pen.

For one, he's the only Marans chick of mine so far with this color.

I'm also on day 20 of my first hatch. Last night several eggs were moving a bit. Today I haven't seen much of anything (but I have been to work, and took the dog to the vet, and went out with hubby, so it's not like I was staring at the bator) I'm starting to get impatient. Yesterday I thought for sure it was getting close, now it seems like nothing. ARGH
