Ha! I didn't even catch it, I just thought I should introduce myself! I'll go work on a siggy....

But this shows that it's autosomal - can come from either the hen or roo - but does that mean that it only requires one gene to show? inquiring minds eh?

i still have loads to learn on the leg feathering , i culled last week a wheaten roo that was part of the breeding program that had feathered legs but his body size was small compared to the davis wheaten roo that i kept .i have another 21 eggs in the bator with 3 silkie / ee cross eggs ready to hatch april 8 and 11 .il do one more hatch of 24 eggs in a few weeks that should only have the davis roo fertility il pay close attention to what happens next hatch and see about feather legs. the hardest thing i have to figure out is what bird throws clean legs ............. more times than not that same bird throws feather legs....out of 45 chicks i got 3 with out feathers on there legs . egg color is my first priority . the eggs im hatching are the first of many generations , \\at some point i will cull the origonal 3 hens from top breeders as the chicks grow and i see the egg color they eventualy lay keeping the origonal rooster from davis line breeding daughters back to him ,, he came from a dark egg , if that dont darken the egg color in 2 or 3 generations i will try the resolution method of breeding the hens sons back to her the origonal hen .... sorry i kill the spelling ,,,, me carpenter ,,,,,
im off topic i know ....
back to leg feathers . i would take a wild guess in saying that that chick with no feathered legs that came from parrents with feathered legs would throw some feathered legs even though it has none i gusee it works boath ways id say
how would u decrese the feathers ?

OK, what I got - tell me if I'm crazy, is that there are 2 types of dominant genes on minor feathering either of which will cause it. THAT explains how a single out a bunch might wind up getting none if both parents only carry one of each of the 2 types or varying between the 4 possibilities? ?? and then there's a 3rd that's not dominant? (see page 3, top of the page) Chicken genetics....phew.

I'll go see if I can wrap my mind around it again....

So if both parents are hetero for all 3?

There is a 25% chance of not getting one of the 2 dominant genes and a 25% chance of getting both of the recessive ones....It makes a pretty small percent that might not get at least one of the 3 options....calculator time....need a punnet square to check myself.

OK- 2 in 64 chicks will have clean legs if both parents only carry one each of the 3 genes.... going to have a check done on my calc.....1/32 is .03 - or 3%

And this is ONLY if I comprehended the simple article correctly!

Unless you can narrow down which hen the clean shanks came from, it might be easier to swap out roos....

Here's a picture of that welsummer hen/ BCM rooster cross. Her legs are light blue, although the picture doesn't do it justice.

Please excuse her missing feathers in the back. The offender has been identified by a purple beak.

So, this is just for reference in case anyone else ever comes across a light blue legged chicken.

I'm having my work checked by 2 sources, not just my comprehension, but the math. It's 3%, not .03%!

I always hated math....

Well, putting him under his feather shanked daughters and the hens under their feather shanked sons might do the trick.

Now I want to know about dominant eye color... Aslbury... Find some info on that one.. It is a little more difficult IMO ....The feathered leg thing is a no brainer from this breeder's standpoint as it breeds forward so easily at least in my pen..hmm that is interesting that you are not having the same success... whethere that has to do with 4 separate factors or not IDK.... ... i will have to puruse this late one night when it is quiet enough around here to take my brain out and play with it.

Nice find... I will brush up on it later..

Seriously if you find something on eye color dominance that would be the bomb!!

Thanks for sharing that!!!!

Both chickens are pure bred, and have correct color legs. Yep, the rooster is black copper maran. The BCM is from Wynette. She is the only one who hatched out like that.

She's not laying yet. She is only 8 weeks old.
