The only thing is that cuckoo is supposed to be dominant....??? isn't it? Could it hide in a brown red or present so lightly that it wasn't noticed?

Alecia~

I don't work with cuckoos but I do believe that the barring is suppose to be dominant. As for the second question I don't know?????

But I do know that stranger things have happened.

The reason I asked about the obvious strip down the back is because I don't believe that cuckoo would have that and one of his little chicks looks as though it has definite strips down the back, or maybe its just my monitor?

the barring is sex linked in males, so hens would always only carry one copy....I have seen it barely visible in BR crosses....

Ya I think see that hint of messy stripe too. But that would be partridge or something? It could be interesting in any case. I'd keep it and see. Could be something to work on.

Me too! I have a hen that is 1/2 BR and 1/2 Blue Ameraucana and she is blue barred but the barring is very faint. I used my BR roo over my blue AM. edited to say..... I think the faint barring has something to do with the blue gene and it acting like a diluter (spelling?)

! ! Oooooo !!

Bev's Salmons have more distinct stripes, but could be!!

http://www.bevsmarans.com/golden_salmon.htm

That may be more likely as it is recessive. So two of Tim's birds would be carrying recessive partridge or brown (notated as eb on the E-locus) or it could be wildtype e+

Here are some more pics, as you can tell I am not very good at taking pics but I am using my cell phone. I really appreciate the input as I am new to Marans.

Thanks

Tim

aalbury,

My chicks do look like the ones you posted. I guess I will have to grow them up to see what I get.
Thanks to everyone for their input it is very helpful.

Tim

I got a Blue Copper Maran from Whitmore Farm and am seriously hoping this one's a girl (no roosters allowed). She/he has the BEST personality; I also got 3 Welsummers at the same time. "Blue", as we call her, was definitely older than the Welsummers, by several days is my guess.
I THINK Blue is about 6 weeks old and definitely has a comb (as do the Welsummers, which are confirmed pullets) but the comb is definitely not pink yet. IF Blue was a roo (it rhymes!) would the comb be red by now? I've also noted just the hint of wattles forming.

She has such a great personality--I really, really, really hope it's a girl.

I've seen some pictures of 6 week old marans, does anyone have pictures of 6 week old Blue Copper Marans and then what they became, pullet or rooster? Thanks for your help!

Fingers crossed!

. . . . Noone can answer my chick problem?

- Well wait, have you shown egg color of your birds yet or do they lay yet? I can't remember.
