But I'm going to have to find homes for some of them so I am glad that they appear, at this time at least, like they are going to be fairly correct.

I wish I lived on a larger property. I am only on 2 1/2 acres so my neighbors can hear them. I am zoned in my area for up to 99 birds I think

so I'm not violating any laws. But the roosters make a bit of noise and I don't want to be a bad neighbor. Besides, I only need about 3 for the number of pullets I will have.

I'm sorry if this has already been brought up, but someone on Facebook had posted that this breeder was selling their flock... SoCal Marans.

Just putting it out there in case someone was interested, and my apologies if I'm repeating something... I didn't look back to see.

Shocking, but true, Bayhorsebonne (Donna G) is selling out. Even her website is for sale.

I wonder why? I mean her website, her stock, her eggs. . .

"Personal reasons" was stated, which is rarely good.

She has some nice stock, and I can only send hopes and prayers her way for a bright future.

I agree. They are still a little to young to accurately determine their sex. I would give them another 2-3 weeks. You should see a lot more comb development on the males by then. It looks like the one large cockeral is going to be a huge rooster!

Kristena, let me know how your hatch goes.

Is your photo of accurate coloration? You say these are from Black Copper Marans? If this is so, I am sorry, because those eggs do not appear dark enough to be considered Marans eggs. (Maybe one or two would quality??)

I agree. If the color in the picture is accurate. Only one or two would be a #4 on the Marans egg color chart.

Question here about culling marans---
are side sprigs on the roosters' comb an absolute deal-killer for show birds? And can a hen have side sprigs? We hatched out 6 chicks from a very popular bcm breeder and unfortunatley all six look like little roos. They are about 8 weeks old now, so no sense putting off the inevitable

.
Anyway, just thought I'd ask you guys before hand.

Again... the normal ratio of hens to roo is 50 percent.... Since some strains of this breed have big combs in the hens it is best to wait till you are sure... It is difficult to tell and the best breeders have the closest to the real deal and some of the birds mature so late and look so unisex that it is nearly impossible to separate hens and pullets till much later on.

Side sprigs are a deal breaker for show.

Agreed! This is why I am waiting with mine. 10 roosters out of 11 chicks is a little suspicious. Even if I have bad luck there has got to be another pullet hiding in that bunch!
