Hi there Maran folks! For 2 evenings I have been trying to find Maran chick pics to try to help me identify colors. I am new to Marans and have 12. Two are BC, and the rest are suppose to be whites and wheatons. They all look like whites to me and I have no idea about the grayish ones. They hatched on or about 4/1. Any ideas or comments?

The white chicks are white. If they were wheaten, they would have darker feathers by now. The blues look blue. They could be copper blue, but you won't know that unless copper feathers start to come out, and sometimes that takes 6 months. No Wheaten that I can see.

Lovely babies Koolduck! Love that little blue! Can't wait to see the blue all grown up, I'm crazy in love with the Blue Coppers and Splash Copper Marans.
My guess is that the little blue will have copper when it grows up....if I were a betting person I'd almost put money on it.

Where did you get your white Marans? Did these all come from the same parent stock?

Now I hope I dont get hate mail for this but.....I dont like white birds...JMO now....aside for the fact that white doesnt float my boat, I think that they will be a gigantic "Eat At Joes" sign for the hawks....maybe keep 2, and sell the rest...interested?

My girlfriend who lives on the other side of town got leghorns from her classroom hatch 2yrs ago...32 of them....she currently has 2. Hawks, her dog, coons, and weasels along with a few in the freezer(that she cant and wont eat )

Thats where the hawk bait comment comes from. Im a nurse....maybe that has something to do with my aversion to all things white!

Well my first chicks from TSC included 3 White Leghorns --- and they are still with us a year later, despite one of them's frequent escapes out into the scary big world (her name is Houdini). If a hawk flies over, the roo calls and they all run under the deck. No losses yet.
I consider raccoons and stray dogs the biggest predator threats here, and they don't discriminate by color as far as I can tell.

Also, they seem to stay white no matter what happens. They dustbath or mud bath, but groom back out on the roost and they are white again by morning.

I don't particularly love the white Leghorns (mean and flighty birds!) but I don't think it's necessary to shunn all white birds.
