Funny, I live in the rainy PNW but I too was wanting rain, and it rained last night. We've had a beautiful streak of sunny or mostly cloudy days for a week, and I just planted a whole bunch of seed. . . So I needed some rain.

Illia I love your avitar! I tried to plant carrot seeds yesterday but the gail force winds prior to the rain stifled that idea! Carrots today!

Next Maran chick color question....Cuckoo? was supposed to be a BC! Im starting to get dissappointed!

Thanks, and don't be worried - It's a Black Copper.

Their amount of white for one thing can vary quite a bit. I have two who are solid black, beak to toe.

I hope you are right! I do see a little copper on the other chick as well as the start of a comb and wattles so.....boy probably. The one that I think is cuckoo will prob be a girl....These were an impulse buys and I think the Gods are having fun with me! Always happens! If I wait too long...I miss out and if I jump I get screwed! I AM MURPHY"S LAW!

OH...and dinahmoe...I am remiss in saying your babies are just the cutest things! Congrats! And I LOVE the copper headed one...dont know if mossiness is good or not but that one gets my vote!

black coppers are born with some white, but if the white on the new feathers is on the tips only, it probably means there was cuckoo in the background. I've had black coppers develope all white feathers occasionally, but the whole feather is white, not just the tips. Then the feather falls out when the adult feathers come in.

Okay, I marked the boys who clearly have lots of gold in their hackles. Then there are some I'm not so sure about. Check out this line up. Hatched Feb. 21.
This guy in the first two pics is my favorite, the Colonel. He appears to be the head cock here and tries to protect the flock. I love his bright red funky comb. The others aren't so interesting. I have others who have better color-but I really like him best. Does anyone see any reason why he would need to go this early in the game?

Now, would you guys cull the following guy due to gold or give him a chance?

I've got several with black breasts and several with spotty breasts. How spotty is TOO spotty? Thanks!

I realize that they are really young and will change over time, but I've got to do some cutting down NOW.

For me, they both have too much color in the breast. And the color is yellowish, not a nice copper color.
But, if your hens hardly have any color in the hackles, you might want to try one of the roos with them to see if it impoves the color.

I did an experiment last year and bred a roo with too much color to hens with hardly any color in the hackles. The resulting hens were indeed better colored in the hackles.
But, some of their offspring with a nicely colored roo, gave me some birds with again, too much color. So it skipped a generation.

I will not try to do that again, but that is just my experience.

Intersting Sue! Thanks for the imput. I wish the standards were more clear. Or maybe I'm just not a good interpreter! Yes, Colonel has a more goldish color in the breast. Darn him! He's just the cutest thing though!
