If your eggs are developing, but just don't hatch, and when you open them, there is a lot of water, the chicks are sticky & can't get out of the shell, or the air cell is still small, you are drowing the chicks due to too high humidity.

I use the completely dry incubation method. No water at all for the 1st 18 days. Then I put in water & try for 65-80% humidity for the last 3 days.

I drowned a lot of Marans chicks before I caught on to this method. It also works well for my Blue Laced Red Wyandottes & Ameraucanas (blue wheaten).

Marans eggs are harder so they don't evaporate as well as other eggs. Its also written on the French Marans site about special incubating & too high humidity.

It tooke me a long time before I actually didn't add water. I kept reducing the amount of water, afraid of not adding water, but finally I took the plunge and got much better hatches.

So, it works for me, might work for you.l

So my hatch is over.....pretty disappointing but the babies I got were totally worth it! Batteries are charging so I will post pics of them later. Out of 29 eggs only 16 hatched...... 3 Copper Splash, 3 BCM's and the rest are Blue Coppers!!!!!!!

They should all be going to their new mamma's on Wednesday.

On the flip side that was my official last hatch of Marans for the year. Yesterday my best friend came by to visit and when she saw the eggs I "was" collecting to put in the bator for what was "suppose" to be my last hatch....I asked if she would like to incubate them in her brand new BEAUTIFUL homemade incubator that her elderly father-in-law loving built for her. She's been so afraid to incubate any eggs in it...(its been running for over a month empty...I just love her) ....her smiled beamed, she went home happy as a june bug on a string with 18 BCM's eggs....11 Welsummer eggs and 4 BBS AM's.

Joke was on me though as she drove out of the driveway with her eggs being held tightly in her lap, she yelled...."But your coming to pick them up after they hatch!!!!"

Thanks, well that lovely little incubator I bought is probably wasted on me I think. I will only be able to use it a couple times a year. Unless I find an appropriate home for culls and roosters, I won't be hatching much. There are about 10 eggs in that bunch that I would really like to hatch.

hehehehee

But, seriously so many people have asked if I trade eggs or sell or whatever and if I ever have a little flock that breeds very true to the standard and still lays very dark eggs, then I probably will for sure. But right now I can't really say that about mine, so I wouldn't feel great about passing them on to others.

I love them though

Oh yes, he's very pretty and he's very correct too. And he's a complete jerk. It breaks my heart.

Most people would have thrown him in a soup pot by now.
He's not allowed to leave the coop. He's on probation.
