So I'm pretty new to the whole marans thing, can't wait to be an ol' pro. Anywho I don't see much of a difference in a Wheaten Roo vs. a Black Copper Roo. At hatch I see the difference but once mature they look the same. So I was wondering if you guys could point out the things obvious to you that stands out as a difference to look for. I would HATE to start a program thinking I had a BCM roo and end up with tons of yellow chicks!

Send Bill on over! Miss Fattie is head hen here!
Funny thing about Fattie (the light colored Cochin), she got up off the nest to do her business, and did her usual routine. First eating, drinking and pooping. Then, she usually does her leisurely 5 minute dust bath. Since it was all muddy out today, that was not an option. SO, she took the time to terrorize everyone else in the coop and run! I am telling you, it was just hillarious. She would go from one to the next, to the next, and just let them all know that she is still in charge! She sure did get her daily exercise!

That was soooo sweet of you to give her those eggs. When are they due to hatch?

I don't remember when they are due because I didn't set them. Sometime around the 12th I think is what she told me. Ooooofff... I better find out...... I have to be sure to make some space for them.

That would have been hilarious to watch that fickle Miss Fattie.....she sounds like a hoot!

Okay here goes my guess at what is different about them......please keep in mind that I do not work with this color variety of Marans and could be wrong about some of the differences. From what I understand the differences are subtle. BerkeleySprings had posted some great photos of a Wheaten Marans roo of his some time back but it illustrated the differences wonderfully. If I had more time this morning I would chase it down and link it for you.

Wheatens have a brown wing triangle- BCM's do not.
Wheatens underfluff (that's what I call the nice soft feathers from the bottom of the breast all the way under the belly and around the tops of the legs) is not true black....to me it appears more greyish taupe black brown.
Here's the one I'm not real sure on.......It was my understanding that Wheatens also had white legs.

Hoping that if I made a mistake that some great BYC'er will come by and set me straight and give you the correct answers.

Have a great day Everyone!!!!!!!

You are correct. The brownish beige triangle on the wing is the biggest give away.
Pinky-white legs is the 2nd.

I've also noticed that as chicks, when they loose the fluff, and you can't tell them apart at that age, Wheatens tend to get a lot more reddish head & neck feathers & faster than the bcs.

Just got my new Marans on Wednesday, can't wait for some eggs. We had Marans before when we first got in to chickens...they were given to us and we did not realize how good the birds really were and ended up with all of them in the freezer except one rooster who we gave away

. I am looking back on egg colour pictures and it makes me sad

We missed those eggs so much we thought we would try again with these guys

Here is my Cupid a birchen blue I had a couple years ago... He is still serving a flock in a nearby town. He is a Valentine line Rooster and a real sweetheart... He took top honors at our local 4h show and was a crowd favorite... All the little kids could hold him.... A real lap chicken.

sorry i miss read your question. For the hole history of French Marans people have by accident mixed the bc with wheaten because of the similarity of the two roosters the easy way for me is the wing cinnamon triangle that is formed when closed
but i am only working with the wheaten and i plan to steer clear of sports (bc that throw wheaten) in particular , to me it would be a step backwards . My Ron Presley line of wheaten marans that I bought from back woods poultry farm (great people ) said their wheaten originally came from a sport thrown from kellerman line of birds many generations back and as far as the bev davis line(wonderful lady ) its un clear to me were her original line of wheaten marans came from , but I would guess a sport also , as for using sports from bc I personally wouldn’t because threes a lot of black copper in the genetic makeup or I believe someone said partridge could occur , I guess what I am saying is all my wheaten came from a sport many many many generations back and were breed true by the 2 great breeders mentioned and were bred many generations true by them , their hard work with the wheaten line is superb and I can see in the offspring im hatching from the crossed lines im raising. this picture is fuzzy but u can see the triangle
