. . . My opinion on the Blue Birchens is that almost everyone has unfinished examples. Even as it says on Bev Davis' site, which I do realize is old, they have a long way to go. Blue Birchens, far as I would think - Should not have any yellow to them, and should certainly look like a normal Birchen but with blue replacing the black, not a bunch of creamy yellow and golden yellow all over. Also, their bodies still have quite some time to go. . .

One of those reasons I never trust Blue Birchen sellers, and wouldn't get them until people actually improve them.

My two cents.

geebs, Your Cupid sounds like a real winner, all around! I think those blue Birchens are just gorgeous! I'm gonna have to start looking around for some!

You are right.....lots of cockerels look blue birchen at first, but sometimes those darn copper feathers start to appear, or the "birchen" feathers turn yellow. That indicates there is copper in his genes.

I am growing out a young blue birchen, with my fingers crossed that he will actually age out as one. So far, so good at about 5 months, but still too soon to know for sure.

My girlfriend who had blue birchen they were so wonderful, she sold them all out last year and went to FBCM I did get some eggs from her but didnt get any birchen out of them. Have two really nice Blue Copper hens, so still trying to figure if I want to keep them or not.
But I know in her's they need more help so they dont throw all the different kinds.

Question for all the marans experts. I have a nice trio of French Blue Splash marans that have just began to lay. Their eggs are really nice dark eggs that are between a 4-6 range on the color chart. This trio of marans do not have feathers on their legs, and I wanted to know if it were possible to breed this back into them, and will a chick from these occasionally have feathered legs. I have Black coppers, and Blue copper marans chicks that have the feathered legs and are very highly bred from reputable breeders. Also, my cuckoo marans chicks do not have feathered legs, is this normal or through proper breeding can I get the feathered legs on these too. Wanting to seriously have the absolute best I can get. I am confident I have that in my blacks and blues, but needed advice on the splash and cuckoos.

Yes, you can breed feathering back into their legs, but it will take some generations to get full feathering (no offspring with clean shanks). It takes focus on who's got both feathered shank genes, and who doesn't.

I have learned (from amazondoc) that you do not want to breed the Copper line with the BBS line. Breed like to like. Such as Wheaten to Wheaten, Copper to Copper, BBS to BBS, etc.
