only one from my cottage hill line of wheatens do that but not all the time ., my oldest hens are torn to pices from my 30 lb davis roo and i thought or think its do to that .

im sorry , poeple dont take the last post wrong , , i was only saying that as a matter of fact my rooster is much biggger thah the hens....but he is in no way no bigger than any outher standard breed wheaten marans .some people on this site beleaves that davis birds are bigger so i useed the word "davis "implying big "but i dont breed for size weather to increse or decrease . i am only concentrating on egg color .......with chickens weather small or large they tear the back of hens mounting them, i have a silkee roo that is just as rough ...... farming , breeding ,culling , hunting
all of this requires a tough skin much like the back of the hen . i dont abuse any of the birds , they are hand fed yogart , and other wonderful treats along with free range axcess they are spoiled rotten . hope i didnt offend anyone who is working on makeing a bantam out of marans or giants. to each his own

This is one of the reasons we should not believe everything we read on the forums. The proposed standard is for 8# cock birds if it has not been changed lately. It is not unusual for the female s too have feathers missing on the back during breeding season if you run your males and females together. I also use larger males if I have them. Too many are using the 4# female and 5# males and wondering why all the off spring are under weight. That is one problem brought up by the Judge at the show in Illinois. Because by APA rules 4 oz. either way .

I agree the Marans needs to improve on size a bit, even if just to get to the proposed standard, and feather loss on hens is normal from breeding, but thats a far cry from a 30 pound roo "tearing hens to pieces".

This is a touchy forum today... I am going to make bantams... The smaller the better!!! and I think I will make them out of all mossies with lots of red in the breast!!!!!!!! (ha ha ha ha ha)....

I have seen his breeding stock. The roos are not that much bigger then the hens. His hens are not tiny or very small. There was a nice balance between the roos and hens. I fully understand not haveing a overly large roo on smaller hens that would be just asking for problems. I think he meet more on the lines his larger of the roos is not as nice mounting/balanceing on the hens. He just needs more manners.
