I have one White Marans from Cuckoo's is this a sport? and would it be recessive white? Of course it's beautiful and has feathered legs might be a pullet really can't tell yet it's from Braden /Cratty lines

Just an historical note about changes to the French Standard. The last change was in 2005 when the Birchen variety was recognised. This was the first change since 1991, at that time the Standard for Brown Red (Black Coppers) was changed from a solid black beast to one with sparse red markings, the Red variety was also abolished and the Wheaten & Black-tailed Buffs were accepted.
What has changed over the years is the number of translations from French to English found on US web pages.

There has always been problems with people being unable to distinguish between Black Copper & Wheaten cock birds.

Wheaten and White recessive chicks from either dark legged Cuckoos, Birchen or Black Coppers can inherit a 'lack of the Dermal Inhibitor' an thus inherit dark or dusky legs, which in all varieties except Brown Red (Black Coppers), Birchens & Black is a disqualifying fault.

These chicks will more than likely have too much color when they feather up. When the chicks hatch from my experience from bought eggs with brown heads they will always have too much color. They are not pure Black Copper.

These are my pullets at the same age also from bc parents

I don't know if they'll breed true or not but I just put some eggs in the bator so I'm going to try to find out

I would cull the Cuckoos with grey shanks.

Yes

If so I could cross a white roo with my cuckoos and cull out the ones with recessive white? I'm real sure though this chick is a pullet....

If you mean this as a test mating to find which Cuckoo hens carry the White recessive gene, then - Yes,
but you have to also cull all the Cuckoo chicks from these matings as they will all carry the recessive white gene. You also need about 10-12 eggs from each hen.

Would any of you please wander over there and give me your opinion RE the sex of 4th chick? Did you all notice a definite color & size distinction of the developing combs on your chicks based on sex? THANKS!

These are very nice chicks so maybe I can find a roo or what other breed is recessive white? Since it really doesn't matter the chicks will not be for breeding only for finding that recessive white gene...I will just raise them for meat the only white birds I have are Dellies and SPRocks not a good choice I think....

I'll get some pics of the shanks for your opinion they are pink with a bit of gray wash is the best way to explain it they came out of nice dark eggs darker than the Goldens​

I have had Bev Davis black coppers for over 3 years, and never hatched a wheaten. I am 100% confidant that if your birds are only her line, will not get any Wheatens.
The Wheatens that pop up are from the Jeane line. Its getting pretty common for wheatens to hatch from that line, so you know that somewhere, a wheaten was in the mix.

I bought mine directly from Bev. If you are getting eggs or birds second hand,then you don't know what was mixed in.

Ahaha, you know I have to make a comment here-it is really kind of futile to spend the time defending the purity of this line or that. Because the bottom line is, once you sell eggs from your stock, or release or sell any animal from your breeding program, you relinquish your control. And I think in general breeders are fairly controling and opinionated people; and of course I say this as someone who has bred animals for years, so I'm not criticizing others by saying it, it is simply an observation I've made about most of us.
But anyway, when you release your stock to others, you relinquish control of your breeding standards; your ideas, your opinions about how the stock from your line should be handled. I'm very glad that there are breeders who are willing to do this so we can all enjoy the breed. But it is an inevitability, a certainty that you will have absolutely no control over what others do with stock from your line. And the only way to avoid this if you find it to be annoying, offensive or unfair, is to not release or sell any of your stock.
