Hi Kathy,

No, I just noticed this the last time I fed them. Maybe I didn't have enough coffee this morning, but sure don't remember seeing it then! I'll try to get some pics here in a bit. The 3rd chick I call Precious, almost has spots instead of barring. Like a Guinea?? LOL. Wonder if the breeder owns Guineas?? May be too late in the day to get a good pic of them with natural light, the room they are in is on the east side of the house, but I'll give it a shot.

I have some that are uummmm, undescribable!

I will get pictures sometime this week.

Havi, not trying to be harsh at all, so I hope it does not come out that way, but, having dealt with a roo with that color before, TRUST ME! You do not want to use him in your program. There are enough people breeding marans now that getting a correctly colored, feather legged roo should not be a problem for you at this point. I just culled and ate a roo yesterday that there was nothing wrong with him at all, just didn't need him. Copper hackles, no white, feather legged, reddish orange eyes, perfect comb, big, friendly, good feet... dinner. I am sure there is someone near by you that has a better roo you coud get reasonably. You have no IDEA how much money, time, feed, effort I wasted on a cockerel like that earlier on. A lot of his pullets came out looking sorta like welsummer mixes, and roos with all kinds of weird colors, like copper breast with heavy spangling, partridge looking mossy marks on feathers, brownish down instead of black/grey down. All kinds of ugly and hundreds of $ down the tubes. Do yourself a favor and get the best roo you can get your hands on before you start to incubate eggs. What bloodline is your pen? The hens look nice. I wouldn't worry as much about the hen with black hackles. She could color in later, or not, but still produce correctly colored offspring.

Ok, here are a few pics. My photography stinks with live things! The light isn't the best, especially on Fuglee, but in the last photo of Precious, you can see the spots.

"Fuglee" the one I now think is a roo

"Precious" see the spots?? I would guess this for sure to be a pullet, but what kind? LOL

Again, I will say, that all four of these chicks, hatched from large, #6 colored eggs on the Marans scale. If these are crossed with something, I'd sure like to know what? The breeder has Silkies, but these all have four toes, and these have pink skin? Pink, can I assume that translates to white when they are butchered?? Too much good feathering coming in to be a Silkie cross, I would think. Of course, he may have other breeds that he does not list on his web site, and in no way do I think this person has deliberately sold me bad wares, please understand, I am NOT bashing this person! But, accidents do and can happen even in the best of operations. The dark chick, in the former pics named "Beaut", is now in question of being a pullet. Although the legs are thick, the comb has subsided in growth, but she/he is a big chick. Cute as they are, for sure, if they don't turn out, they surely won't be used for Marans breeding purposes! Just trying to get a bearing on what these might be.

You'll have to go to the breeder and find out what they have. Theres no way to even hazard a guess until we can find out what stock they have. Have you sent the breeder these pictures?

Not these pics Halo, just got them on here. Sent him the others and asked if he had ever had this coloring come up. He said no. Will send these to him too. How are yours looking?

One is growing in pretty black, and so is the other, with a lot of mossyness, so I think I lucked out. Im still interested to see what the white leg feathers end up being.

Well, I hope yours come out for you. The shank feathering on mine went like this:

Chick #1 - never had any

Chick #2 - dark, sparse feathering

Chick #3 - sparse YELLOW feathering

Chick #4 - sparse YELLOW feathering

As of today, only Beaut #2, the dark chick has really any feathering, albeit very sparse compared to what I've seen around other places
