i'm considering running a sprinkler today. like the other person in my neck of the woods we have a heat index today of 110.

my birds seem ok, but i did notice that mama hen (black java) has taken leave of her foster baby FCBMs sooner than i expected. i think 1) they don't need to be warmed up in this heat, even at night and 2) it's too dang hot for them to be all over her. she was looking for a nest box, mating, and leaving them to roost elsewhere yesterday. they are just three weeks old. seem to be fine though.

my two coops are both built so that the coops themselves are up off the ground and provide shade. still...i am a little worried about my big heavy ladies. the roo also seems to be holding his wings out constantly. i better see about that sprinkler.

My guys are holding their own, I guess. My Marans pen has a large maple tree over probably 75% of it, so they have good shade. And, we've had some VERY WELCOME breeziness, even in the hottest parts of the day, so I think that helps. Still, it's only blowing around more hot air!

I wish I could do a cool mist system for each of my pens, but that takes a whole lot more $ than I have. I feel badly for them this time of year - especially the hens, when go to lay. They get hot in the coop!

Wynette,

I didn't see anything in the proposed standard about leg color or feathering of the shanks. Are they not going to follow the French standard for this?

Ok, phew! I may have missed that part, just got back from shopping for the coop materials. I am so ticked at the kid I had hired, that was supposed to show up today and never did, grrrrrrrrrr. Looks like I'll be doing this coop on my own. Oh Lord, please give me strength and help my poor chickens survive my ignorance! All the stuff comes tomorrow, and I got off cheaper than I expected. Of course, I assume there will be things in the order that I forgot to include, so I'll factor that in and be on target. Got a brand new window with screen, 2x2, for 20 bucks! It was a display model and they wanted it gone! Yipppeee! The young salesman and I were doing it all quite well putting the materials together. In walks one of the owners, grabs my list, and starts looking at it. "Well, the list says here that you need 14 pieces of exterior 2x4s. He's only got you down for 8." Yes, I changed my mind, I don't need ext. grade on the inside. "Well, don't ya think you ought to stay with the list the contractor gave you??" Swallowed hard, and very nicely replied, "I AM the contractor. Contractor had 3 glasses of wine the night the list was made. I see my error now and corrected it." The kid just kind of snickered, the old owner just huffed off, and me and the kid went back to doing business. Bought a reciprocating saw too! Can't wait to use that baby!!! I can do this, I can do this, I can do this! Will eventually need help putting up walls and roof, but that's what neighbor boys, out of school, and bored out of their minds are good for! Wish me luck!!

I had a roo that started out gold hackles like that, but next moult, he started growing in the correct copper color hackles behind his comb and halfway down his neck. I didn't wait to find out how they turned out because I had a big roo depopulation event and he was invited.

I have no shortage of incorrect birds.....at least his feet are not yellow and around 20 weeks they dress out very nice I was just wondering I don't have any luck with Black Coppers but I know I'm not alone

I have had some WEIRD colored roos come out. The weirdest one was a flat copper breast with heavy spangling like a Spitzhouben, or however you spell it. LOL
