I've had roos that were not as assertive as other hatch mates and matured slower, they also like to hang out with the girls and not particulary interested in play fighting with the other boys, even upon maturity they were non-aggressive and also crowed later.

to me, it looks like a pullet. I think a lot depends on the line. My pullets/hens have decent sized combs & wattles.

one thing, I've not seen one with a partially black comb. I would think that would not be desirable, but again, I don't show. I've just not seen one before.

I have only seen the "black" or darker combs on the pullets while they are growing out, then suddenly they start changing out to pale pink with some of the dark coloration still there, but that grows out. None of my males get that dark of a comb, they all seem to have a different color of comb from the get go and then by about 10-14 days they start to fatten up and turn a brighter pink than the girls.

In a couple of the photos of hathors birds I thought pullet but then I thought roo, this one vexes me. I do agree with you when you say in could be the line of birds, this particular line I am not versed with nor have any experience with.

A while back I posted on this thread (post 6604) to figure out if one of the FBCM’s I hatched was a pullet or cockerel. Well I have my answer for sure!!!! I hatched out a total of 4 FBCM’s from shipped eggs and ended up with 3 pullets and 1 cockerel.

anything undesirable about using a roo like that for breeding, if all other things pointed to him being your best bet? non-aggressive sounds great...as long as he took good care of his girls and was just as virile. i have little kids in the pens all the time and like the idea!

i have another "king" roo who can do the heavy lifting with his testosterone levels.

Who has Wheaten Marans (or BW Marans) hatching eggs or chicks? Or do you foresee them being available next spring?

I'd love to know more about this variety.

I got my first eggs today and I THINK they are from my Marans - I'm guessing she laid one yesterday evening and one this evening - but I'm not sure. My other hens of the same age are EEs but I am hoping these are from Cadbury (our Marans). For you Marans owners - do these look like first time Marans eggs? They aren't super dark but I am hoping they will darken as she matures?

Here is Cadbury -

And here are the eggs - (first one is inside with a flash - the second one was outside with my cell - I was too excited to even make it into the house
