I have about 5 of these that I hatched about 6 or 7 weeks ago. They came from the darkest eggs I have ever hatched. Of course, most are roosters, but ..... YES, I am keeping them (for awhile anyway). I also got a few that do look "correct," so far.

Hi Megcpat!

Yes there is such a thing as Splash Copper Marans. Those two pullets are not splash copper, matter of fact, they look identical to a Wellie x Marans or Wellie cross Wheatons maybe.

This is an old photo but he still looks the same...this is a Splash Copper Marans roo.

Thanks. I guess that sounds about right. Sigh.

Anyhow..... Your rooster is stunning! I wouldn't minded at all if one of these chicks had grown up into THAT.

You all crack me up! I have missed you!!!

So that is what that Roo is-- a Splash Marans!!! I had no idea, thanks PinkChick!

Wynette-- odd thing is that all these birds had some nice feathering intially. Why it has lessened is beyond me unless it is the dry climate here or someone pecking it off??? No those two roo's aren't from Bev although they may be from her in a round about way. I sure hope it molts out

Megcpat-- Those look like the birds from France! Alot like the Wheaton Marans although mine look a little different in the hackles and have feathered shanks.

Kathy-- I bet alot of that will molt out, so don't get rid of them too soon. I know how frustrating it is to have those mossy ones but they sure lay a nice egg.

The Bev Davis hens are coming along very nicely. Pretty girls, I can't wait until they start to lay.

So... what are your favorite Marans breeds everyone? I am trying to decide if I should keep the Golden Cuckoo's or not. The hens seem on the small side but I love the Roos color (that is why I got them in the first place)

But I have housing issues now thanks to all the predators that are coming for buffet dinner at my place and I have to get some numbers down.

Awe...sorry to hear you're having predator issues - that BITES!

I absolutely love the golden cuckoos for the same reason you stated - the roos are drop-dead gorgeous. I would have a very difficult time with that decision!!
