Ive thought about doing that myself. Either with the BCM or the Welsummers. I know alot of people cant stand the speckled ones, but I LOVE them!! I currently have one BCM hen that lays a dark egg and every other one has lots of speckles around the middle area. Right now I have Wellies in the bator from a fellow BYCer and about 6 of them are a nice med. brown with dark speckles all over. I know nothing about breeding, but I might have to look into that with the Wellies. [wheres that little thinking smiley when you need him?]

I got 10 from her this spring but only had one hatch and it was a wheatie pullet... beautiful eggs and was planning on having the wheatie in my layer flock but neighbors got a new dog and it came over and got her

I blame the poor hatch rate on the post office and my area. Being in Colorado I've noticed that I can't get hardly anything to hatch from the east (tried 3 times-3 different sellers) but from KS did great!
Let us know how they do! The eggs I got from her were the darkest I've ever gotten.

Debbie~ the coop is coming along nicely!

One of the babies hatched last night about 12:30am, I have at least 7 others that are pipped!

I'm hoping for a fury of hatching in a few hours!!!!

Once they are dry and in the brooder I will post pics!

GO BABIES, GO!!!

Debbi - neato on finding neighbor boys to help! Most kids nowadays would much rather sit in front of a video game...sad.

Kathy - I think for me, it depends where I am in my breeding program. I'm pleased with the consistency of my stock now, and very pleased with egg color; I WILL hatch an egg that's not as dark as I'd like, because I know what each and every hen is capable of laying, and I don't keep the ones that don't lay dark enough in my breeder pen.

If I had enough room (and a DH that would support the idea), I'd have a completely separate pen where I only hatched the VERY darkest eggs, just for the sake of having dark eggs. My eating egg customers absolutely LOVE the really dark ones, and it would be fun to have a pen where all I concentrated on was egg color.

ETA: I don't have ANY problem with breeders who are breeding just for egg color whatsoever; my issue is when they don't SAY that when they are selling hatching eggs.

interesting point. i think i am going to focus on egg color, because i can make more $ (FEED BILL! lol) on dark eggs than i can on selling eggs for breeding--at least in the short term! i will certainly take your advice and let people know if i do go that route.

Hi Everyone!

So I don't think that I can complain anymore about the lighter egg color that Splash Marans can and do sometimes lay.

This photo really does not do these eggs justice.

ETA: Ya'll remember that Splash hen that I had that gave me those purplish colored eggs???? Well one of her first chicks from one of her first eggs that I ever got to hatch has started to lay.......her eggs are purplish just like her mamma's. Will have to get a photo next time I go over to my friends house where she lives, the pullets name is Splash Jordan...lol.

One of my black copper hens started laying last week. She is laying VERY dark speckly eggs. Does anyone know what #on the chart these would be?
I don't have a marans eggs chart to compare them to so I used the nestle cocoa container and a pure white leghorn egg lol. This is her third egg this dark. I thought I wasn't gonna hatch any more out this year but I might set some of these......

WOOT!!!! FLGARGDENGIRL! BEAUTIFUL EGG!

Sitting here looking at that egg on the screen and looking at my MCC shade card it looks between and 8 and a 9!!!!! In my opinion.... that egg is what Marans is all about!

Can I borrow that to show my splash gals what they are suppose to be laying??? LOL!

Do you know which bird is laying it and do you have a photo of her to share?
